Alfie – 1 year old male German Shepherd Cross

Alfie (ref 49d) Alfie is a sweet, intelligent and enthusiastic 1 year old black and tan male German Shepherd Dog cross. He arrived at Derby RSPCA Centre when his last owners were no longer able to look after a dog due to an unforeseen change in their circumstances. He is a young dog who is great fun to be with and full of inquisitiveness, energy and sheer joy at being alive.

If he woofs at you when you look at him in his kennel, it is only because he doesn’t understand why you are staring at him and is asking why – so don’t be put off, because Alfie is a lovely dog.

He is also very clever and receptive – and although he knows very few commands at present, he is a dog who is absolutely bursting with intelligence and potential. He loves being alive and is interested in everything, including learning, as well as playing, going for walks, investigating the world around him and generally messing about. He could easily be trained to be a model of obedience and would probably enjoy it all immensely. He is also house-trained.

Alfie needs a special loving home with experienced dog-owners who will help him overcome his fears and help him build up his confidence. He can find strangers very frightening and has obviously had a rough time in the past, so he needs lots of calm reassurance to help him become the relaxed, carefree and happy dog he should be. He already is that happy dog at home, but can find the outside world and its inhabitants all rather threatening.

Alfie is very friendly with people once he knows them and loves to play with them and be made a fuss of by them. He thrives on being among friends, so being left all on his own would make him very unhappy. He would be suitable for a dog-knowledgeable household where any children were aged at least 10 years and where he would always have some company.

His attitude towards other dogs seems to vary from dog to dog, depending on how they react to his own particular brand of liveliness, enthusiasm and bounce. He would not be suitable to share a home with cats and other small furry animals, because he would have huge fun chasing them.

Alfie is a wonderfully upbeat and exuberant chap whose love of being alive is enormously infectious. He would be the perfect dog for calm, active, loving and sensible owners who can help him build up his confidence and who have plenty of time to give him all the exercise, play, walks and mentally-stimulating games he needs. He really does deserve a new life in a happy and loving home. Sitting on your own all day in a kennel is an awful waste of life for a 1 year old boy.
