Antonia is an 8 to 9 year old Mioritic Shepherd. The sadness of her life is very much reflected in her eyes but the repression within her lifts just a little bit each day and one day not too far away I know she will be happy. Antonia spent the first 8 years of her life living on the end of a chain in a yard in Romania. she has chipped and broken teeth that are a result of desperately trying to chew through the metal. After eight years of a boring existence with no comfort and insufficient food she was taken to the public shelter in Radauti where she also did not fare well in getting her fair share of food.
She arrived with us a few weeks ago in a sorry state. Her fur was matted to the skin and beneath the filth and debris was an emaciated body and unhealthy skin. Antonia did not adapt well to living in a house at first. She struggled with the walls and boundaries and would intermittently look for a way to escape. However a few weeks later and she is relaxed and settled. Her matts are gone but she still looks very sad and bereft. We are yet to see her tail wagging but there is a light beginning to come on in her eyes. She enjoys her meals and loves to lie in dog beds rather than the cold hard floor she’s always been forced to endure. She is still thin but every day there is slightly better covering on her poor old bones.
She has stopped shying away from human hands but is yet to show signs of understanding or enjoying human contact. She seems to see no reason at all why anyone would want to touch her. It is still very early days for Antonia but I think her development will continue to progress and in the right hands she will one day wag that tail!
