Arthur – 12 year old male Weimaraner
This handsome gent is Arthur, a 12 year old Weimaraner who is in the care of the Oldies Club, in a foster home in Plymouth, Devon. It took Arthur about a month to really settle in his foster home and start to show his personality, but he’s now a firm favourite with his foster carer who tells us that he is “LOVELY!” She describes Arthur’s perfect home as: “A family home, maybe with other dogs but no cats or very young children. Arthur is a big dog, and his legs stretch for ever when he lies down, so not a very small house. He likes to be able to sit and look out of the window.”
Arthur is a sociable gentleman who is very good with other dogs he meets on walks. We therefore think he would be fine to live with another dog, provided it wasn’t a bouncy youngster. Poor Arthur freezes and shakes when he sees cats, but he has not tried to chase them yet! He would probably be happiest in a cat-free home. Arthur is used to being left for about 4 hours and he’s fine with that. Arthur is very gentle with children but, due to him having arthritis, we wouldn’t want him to live with very young ones. He should be fine to live with considerate children aged from 6 years upwards.
Arthur needs to be walked little and often to continue to build up his muscles and stamina. He loves his walks and he pulls enthusiastically on the lead. His recall is fairly good but his foster carer puts her hand in the air when she calls him because he sometimes has trouble seeing her. His recall goes to pot completely if he is enjoying a good game though! Arthur is excellent in the car.
Docile Arthur’s favourite pastime is eating, and he also enjoys being in water. He is a bit hesitant to actually swim, but he loves a good splash around. If he does swim it seems to affect his legs a lot, and he starts to limp quite quickly.
Arthur has been vet-checked since coming into our care. He is neutered, vaccinated, wormed and flea-treated. Arthur has arthritis for which he is taking 50mg Rimadyl daily — his foster carer has tried to cut it down to half a tablet on the vet’s advice but Arthur struggled with the pain. He will therefore probably need to be on this medication for the rest of his life. He also has many large fatty lumps, some of which are unsightly. Two lumps were suspect and so these have been tested; the vet is happy that they are fatty lumps. Arthur was underweight when he came into our care, but he is eating well and his weight has increased.
Gentle Arthur has clearly made quite an impression on his foster family. They tell us:
“He is the most beautiful natured dog, so gentle and affectionate. Has been the most charming addition to our family. Is very quiet, only ever barking when he sees the sea or a river. He has probably not had the best of times in recent months, and deserves someone who loves him to make the rest of his life happy. They will be lucky to have him.”
