Zeus – 1 year old male Akita
This is Zeus, a 1 year old male Akita looking for a new home due to his owner’s ill health. Zeus’ owners have obviously spent a great deal of time on his manners and behaviour, as such, Zeus is a laid back boy who was happy to sit and give his paw. Pulling slightly on the lead whilst walking, Zeus responds well to guidance, his walking could easily be rectified through training and possibly the use of a suitable head collar. Our assessor observed Zeus’ behaviour around toys and food, he found that Zeus was neither aggressive or possessive with either.

Zeus has spent a lot of time with the owner’s grandchild, and is described as friendly towards children, known or unknown to him; although initially curious, he is happy to meet new people. Zeus’ owners describe him as friendly towards dogs of all sizes, given the correct introductions Zeus could potentially live with another dog. He is currently untested with cats. Zeus is based in Middlesborough.

This is Poppy, a lively 2 year old Akita girl looking for a new home due to a change in her owner’s circumstances. A sweet natured girl, Poppy is vocal, bouncy and loves to meet new people. With a fair knowledge of commands, after a bit of typical Akita stubbornness, Poppy will sit nicely, she is also very gentle with treats. Having had little training on the lead, Poppy can pull, her current owner uses a harness which appears to be fairly ineffective, however our assessor is confident that with some training and the use of a proper head collar, Poppy will learn quickly!

Currently living with Leo (FOA Ref: 304) pending successful introductions Poppy could possibly live with another dog, we do feel that Leo and Poppy can be a bad influence on each other and as such that they would be better placed in separate homes! Leo and Poppy have both lived with children aged nine and above, and react equally well to both children and adults. Loveable, happy and full of fun – could Poppy be the girl for you? Poppy is based in West Yorkshire.

This is Polo, a handsome 5 year old Akita boy looking for a new home due to a change in his home circumstances. Polo is a big lad, devoted to his owners, however his recent lack of devotion to the resident cats has led to an upset household. Initially wary of strangers, it took Polo a little while to fully relax in the company of our assessor, but after a short amount of time he began to seek out treats and attention. Whilst very affectionate and adoring with his owners; Polo can be aloof, and prefers to get to know people before they approach him in an overly affectionate manner! Very intelligent, Polo has a good knowledge of commands, and has been well trained in this respect by his owners. Good with treats, our assessor found that Polo knew how to accept, and has not shown overt signs of food aggression. Walked regularly by his Mum at the side of a pram, Polo is equally happy going for a nice jog with his Dad! Polo is keen to be around other dogs, and pending successful introductions could potentially live with another dog.

Polo will require an incredibly experienced owner, who is willing and able to commit time to his further training. For more information about Polo, please get in touch. Polo is based in Northamptonshire.

This is Mescha, a sweet 17 month old Akita girl looking for a new home due to a relationship break down. Friendly and happy to be approached Mescha enjoyed a good stroke and a cuddle from our assessor, who describes her as “adorable and very gentle”. Incredibly calm for such a young dog, Mescha has a good knowledge of commands, however in true Akita style likes to display this on her own terms! Gentle with both toys and treats, Mescha shows her more playful side with the other resident dog, bounding around and having a lot of fun! Mescha currently lives with teenage children; she will not be placed in a home with young children due to a lack of experience around them.

Currently living with Hector (FOA Ref: 216) we are confident that pending successful introductions Mescha could live with another dog, and whilst they do not have to be re-homed together, applications to adopt Mescha and Hector as a pair will be welcomed. For more information about Mescha, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Mescha is based in Nottinghamshire.

This is Kai, an incredibly good looking 16 month old boy looking for a new home due to a change in his owner’s circumstances. Incredibly confident and friendly, Kai instantly approached our assessor to accept a fuss. A very excitable boy, Kai has a knowledge of commands, he will sit and lie down when asked, in a giddy manner – however, as an incredibly food motivated boy, Kai responds well to food based training. Kai has not shown any signs at all of food possession or aggression, and took treats nicely from our assessor. Presented with a toy, Kai was content to play and share without guarding.

Kai has been socialised with other dogs, and could potentially live with another, pending successful introductions. With regards to children, Kai has spent a considerable amount of time with a five year old, and as such we feel that he could live in a home with children aged eight and over. For more information about this handsome boy, please don’t hesitate to get in touch! Kai is based in Selkirkshire, Scotland
19Mar2010 | Friends of Akitas Trust UK | READ MOREIke – 14 month old male Akita
This is Ike, an incredibly playful 14 month Akita boy looking for a new home due to a change in his owner’s circumstances. Enthusiastic and waggy, Ike is involved in every aspect of family life – he even enjoys having his teeth brushed and hair dried! Confident and happy, Ike has a good knowledge of commands, although still being at a “puppyish” age he can be selective over whether or not he chooses to obey – we are confident that this can be progressed further as Ike grows up in his new home. Initially pulling on the lead, Ike soon calms down and enjoys his time outside.

Ike at present has separation anxiety, which makes it difficult for him to be left alone. Ike’s owners have sought advice, which they are currently implementing, Ike’s potential adopters should be aware of this; the Trust will support new owners in tackling this issue. As a young and responsive dog, we feel that in the right environment Ike will flourish.
Ike has experience of children; however he has not lived with any, with this in mind he will not be placed in a home with young children. Ike is described as friendly towards other dogs, and to cats, pending successful introductions we will consider a home with other animals. For more information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch! Ike is based in Lincolnshire

Meet Harvey, an excitable 2 year old young man Akita looking for a new home, after being picked up as a stray. Taken to the pound, Harvey served his seven days and has now been moved to FOA safe kennelling. Described as an alert and friendly boy, Harvey has obviously had previous training, and was happy to sit or lie down, wait and give his paw! Kennel staff at the pound claimed that Harvey loves his food; however he would patiently wait for a treat and take it gently. Despite being a small boy, Harvey pulls a lot on the lead, once out and walking for a while he calms down enough to respond to correction .

Harvey will be tested with different walking aides now that he is under FOA care. Currently untested with other dogs, Harvey will be further observed in kennels and this information updated accordingly! As a stray without history, Harvey will not be placed in a home with young children. For more information, please get in touch. He is based in West Yorkshire.

This is Coco, a gorgeous and sweet 3 year old Akita girl looking for a new home following the death of her owner. A happy girl, Coco greeted our assessor with a big cuddle, and instantly started to sniff out treats! Currently being looked after in kennels, Coco has made a firm impression on all who have met her so far, leading them all to fall head over heels. Impeccable on the lead, Coco seemed excited to be out for a walk and was keen to sniff everything. Gentle with treats, Coco has not displayed any signs of food aggression or possession whilst in kennels. Coco does not appear to have a good knowledge of commands, however she is quite treat motivated and eager to please, which should assist with training in her new home.

Due to the limited background knowledge that we have for Coco, she will not be placed in a family with young children. Coco has not been directly tested with other dogs at present; however she has not shown to have any issues walking past other dogs in kennels. Coco could potentially live with another dog pending successful introductions. For more information about Coco, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Coco is based in Lancashire.

Meet Leo, a curious 18 month old Akita boy looking for a new home due to a change in his owner’s circumstances. An absolute little star, Leo
charmed our assessor with his friendly personality and love of cuddles! Leo has a good knowledge of commands, is gentle with treats, and whilst is strong and bouncy on the lead, it is felt that this is mainly due to him not getting out that much at present. Playful and happy, Leo was keen to interact with our assessor, and to include her with his toy games. Good with food, Leo has not displayed any signs of food aggression or possession.

Described by his owners as friendly with other dogs, pending successful introductions Leo may be able to live with another dog. Leo has lived with young children, and the decision to place Leo in a young family will be made on a case by case basis.
