Rocky – 4 year old male Collie Cross

Rocky is a 4 year old Collie that a young girl bought as an 8 week old puppy. The girl kept leaving Rocky with her parents. She would have him back for periods of time but has now decided she does not want him back again. Her parents have now moved into a small flat without a garden so have asked us to take Rocky him. Rocky was nervous and in his kennel and initially frightened of people, but once he had some treats and he played with a ball, he relaxed and enjoyed being out. He ran enthusiastically after the ball and seems young and fit – he runs in a typical collie fashion – fast and focused! He was happy to be stroked in-between running after balls, and even rolled over on his tummy for it to be rubbed. He took treats gently. He brings the ball back to you, lies down, and throws it towards you with his mouth for you to throw it again!

He really loves a game and will go on running after the ball for as long as you want to throw it! He seems a lovely little collie who really enjoys playing games, and he really did NOT want to go back into his kennel after the happiness of being out and having company, barking to call us back. He is bright and alert and would probably enjoy being trained to do agility and fly-ball – he already began to reveal a playful, characterful disposition, and he has got a lot to give if someone would have time to let him shine! Rocky has a shiny, thick and wavy coat, particularly wavy in the ruff around his neck and it seemed in good condition. He is used to the lead, and sat to have it put on. We did not introduce him to any dogs today, but he showed an interest in them when they entered a field below. He may be a bit nervous and cautious when he first meets you, but he just needs someone who will introduce him gently to a new home, and help him get over the fears he feels now, to feel safe and trusting so he can relax, be himself, enjoy life with you, and show you what a lovely companion he can be.

Rocky has had quite a few changes in his life. Being a very intelligent, loyal breed of dog, collies do find this hard to deal with. So Rocky really deserves his own, forever home with people who will be consistent and loyal back for him.

Rocky is a super dog. His housetraining is great and he is good mannered. He does bark a bit so needs a home not too close to neighbours. He doesn’t like being away from people and this makes him bark. He is OK at night. He gets on really well with all the other dogs and has accepted the three new ones very well. He still loves fetching a ball endlessly and this does tire him out.

Dougal – 3 year old male West Highland White Terrier

This is Dougal and he is a 3 year old male West Highland White Terrier, he has a mind of his own and if allowed to will do his own thing. He has learnt that sometimes snapping gets him his own way so it would probably be best not to go with children. He does bark, especially at postmen and he doesn’t like travelling in the car – those are his bad points. He is however utterly adorable and is only being given up as his owner has a heart complaint and can no longer care for him. Dougal is his original name, the only other is his pedigree name of Snuffmills Scotch. He was born on the 2nd July 2006.

He is a very lovable little dog although he is not a dog to be cuddled on your knee, he loves being stroked and given a good rub all over his body, especially the first thing in the morning. He was apparently taught not to climb the stairs and will not venture to do so. He loves a walk and he has at least 3 every day. He meets many dogs on his walks and he gets on very well with them. When out of the house he is a perfect dog and butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth, it is in the house when he is protecting his property that his temperament changes. We live on a river bank and he hates the seagulls flying over and the birds and the river ducks invading his property’.
He is very well mannered indeed, and a very fine and handsome Westie. He is very good on a lead, and clean in the house. He is a lovely and friendly dog, with lots to give – but he will need a terrier-savvy carer: his fosterer has been nipped 3 times by him – by no means deliberate bites, more of an accidental collision of hand and teeth when both were retrieving the same item at the same time. His ideal home would be with a bigger dog who he will look up to and respect, and a kind but firm human to keep him in his place.

Bertha – 3-4 year old female Rottweiler cross German Shepherd

Bertha is a 3-4 years old Rottweiler cross probably with a German Shepherd who was picked up as a stray. She is about 30-35 kilos, so not really big for a bitch of this type. She is a little on the lean side but is not underweight. She is a very people friendly endearing dog who loves to be cuddled and stroked and will constantly follow you all around the house for this attention, which is nice. Bertha is on the small size for a Rottweiler cross but is still a fairly powerful dog who has typical Rottweiler characteristics including an intelligent, alert and confident manner. She is obedient, willing to please and very easy to control as she is totally submissive to all members of the family. She has been very quickly accepted by the foster families big mastiff dog and they have now become become best of mates.

Bertha is fully house trained and has had no accidents in the house at all. She lets you know when she needs to go outside to do her business by sitting by the door and gently crying. Bertha happily sleeps all night downstairs in her basket and doesn’t get up in the morning until we come down stairs. She is a delight to take out for walks as she does not pull on the lead and when off the lead in local fields her recall is excellent. She has been friendly with all dogs she has met on her walks, although at times she can be a little indifferent preferring her own company whilst she explores her new surroundings. Her play, although non aggressive, can at times be noisy and growly. She is very approachable when eating and is not food aggressive in anyway. Bertha is not destructive or a barker when left alone for a few hours in the house and she is also a good traveller making no fuss when in the back of our estate car. Bertha is a very friendly keen to please type dog who is a lovely character and great company. She would suit an active family with or without another friendly dog, but unfortunately without small children as they could easily be accidentaly knocked over by her. Bertha is a joy to have in our home.

Bradley – 4 year old male Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Bradley is a 4 year old pure Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Bradley is a lovely dog and is very well trained in the home and out on the lead. He is stunning to look at, a very handsome chap! Bradley is very nervous of people and reacts by growling if he is unsure, and we are working on this. He is very loyal and affectionate, always wanting to wait for you to catch up. He has obviously had some difficult times. Bradley is living with two other Staffordshire Bull Terriers quite happily, though he has to be watched closely and is never left unsupervised. Bradley would not be suited to a home with children as his issues have to be respected at the moment. Understanding teenagers would be fine with him. It is recommend he would not be homed with other dogs unless they are very calm. This is a beautiful boy who just needs some time and experience to help him through.

7/2/10 He is happy to be stroked and petted. He can be excitable, and can be vocal when he’s excited and when he’s left in his kennel. He ignores the traffic, but he barked and lurched at a motor-bike. He didn’t snatch taking treats – not as gentle as some can be, but not over-snatchy. That said, Bradley is a dog with issues. He is unpredictable and will snap when in the mood so mustn’t go with children or other dogs. He needs an experienced owner with lots of time to help him.

1/3/10 I’d like to reiterate that Bradley was again very sweet and no trouble or signs of issues at all – although he is excitable, and very vocal inside his kennel.

Bonnie – 5 year old female Staffordshire Bull Terrier Cross

Bonnie is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross and the vet thinks she is probably about 5 years old. She is very laid back and spends a lot of time in her bed. She is however slowly starting to come out of herself and learning to play and greet visitors and always with a wagging tail. She responds to basic commands i.e sit, paw etc and has a very healthy appetite. She walks well on the lead and has been fine with other dogs that we have met, but she doesn’t seem to know how to play with them so tends to just have a sniff and walk on.

She has now learned to accept and ignore the cat. She is not bothered by noisy children or being made a fuss of. Bonnie is being fostered in Yate.

Shep – 4 year old male Collie Cross

This is Shep and he is 4 year old male Collie Cross. He has been handed into us reluctantly, his owner can’t take him with her into rented accommodation. He’s a handsome lad but we’ve not been able to get a good picture yet – he doesn’t seem to know what treats are! Shep is a pleasure to foster. He is a fantastic dog who is very good with all sorts of commands. He can be a bit food possessive though, mainly over bones.

He’s generally very friendly to other dogs and children, he is getting better with cats and does now leave them alone when told to do so, but he’d prefer to chase them! He is a little nervous still and doesn’t really like to be left and is quite strong willed – a typical collie really. He’s very affectionate, he doesn’t realise he’s not supposed to be a lap dog – that’s one of his favourite places to be! Let’s hope he finds his forever home in 2010, he deserves it.

Jack – 18 month old male Rottweiler

This is Jake and he is a 18 month old male Rottweiler and as you can see from the pic is a big baby! Jack is in kennels in West Wales as we have no foster places available for him at the moment although the kennels are lovely and the owner and staff love him dearly he has been there for too long now and we are desperate to get him to Somerset into a home environment. Jack has some malabsorbtion problems and at present has a medicated powder sprinkled onto his food daily and is kept on a bland low fat complete dog food the medication costs around £30 per month but there are more natural remedies which we can discuss with you he is also finding kennel life very stressful which is not helping.

Jack is being walked regularly by volunteers who say when away from the kennels is happy to meet and greet all dogs and people, he doesn’t seem to have seen much of the world but is a typical Rottie and will take most things in his stride when he is happy that it is safe. Jack will need to go to a Rottie or large dog experienced home without young kids. He is untested with cats etc. although Jack will happily sit and cuddle all day, he will need someone committed to carry on his socialisation and training to ensure he is a happy sociable ambassador for the breed.

Diesel and Mucker – 3 year old male Collies

Meet Diesel and Mucker and they are 3 year old male Collies, the best of friends, so we do not want to part them. They are both neutered and friendly. They have not been used to cats but show no agression to any when out walking. Both dogs are extremely affectionate. When out for a run they do not run off so far and come back when called. They love meeting other dogs and greet them with tails wagging. Diesel enjoys playing with a frisbee and Mucker chasing a ball. Both enjoy the water. When the weather is fine and we go out in the garden they lie on the patio in the sun or play together. They are wonderful company to each other. Two children visited the house the other day and the dogs were fine with them.

They love attention and would be fine with a lively family. They tend to bark for a short period when people arrive, but do not show aggression. Hopefully they find a new permanent home soon so they can build a new settled life and be happy.

Jilly – 2 year old female Lurcher

This is Jilly and she is a 2 year old female Lurcher. Her dad was evidently a Deerhound. She does not like cats or skateboards. We do not take her walking much at night as she gets a little spooked by shadows and rubbish bags! She will eat any sort of food, hers or yours. It would be good if she could have company during the day. If she is left alone, she gets bored and absentmindedly will chews things.

Jilly was spaded around the six months mark. She is micro chipped and vaccinated.
