Mavis – 6 year old female Cross-Breed
Mavis (ref 201d) is a very friendly brindle coated 6 year + adult female cross-breed. She was brought to Derby RSPCA Centre because her last owner had abandoned her. Mavis absolutely loves to be with people and should make an excellent companion and playmate. She would be suitable for a household where any children were aged 10+ and very kind to animals. She adores playing but is not a toy herself, so children would need to treat her with respect and not tug at her, pull her about and frighten her.
She also loves being stroked, being groomed and being allowed to join in any fun that’s going on. Mavis knows at least 3 commands, possibly more, and is a bright little dog altogether. She would need to be the only pet in the household, since she doesn’t enjoy the company of other dogs and - being part Terrier - would be certain to chase after cats and other small furry animals.
Mavis really is a thoroughly likeable little character, so very keen to make friends with everybody and so very full of fun and playfulness. If you can offer her all the attention, regular walks, love, care and friendly interaction she needs to keep her a happy and healthy dog, then lovely Mavis may well be the perfect dog for you.

Ethel (ref 202d) is a very sweet-natured black and grey 8 year + female cross-breed. She was brought to Derby RSPCA Centre because her last owner had abandoned her. The sooner this poor unwanted elderly lady can find herself a loving new home with gentle, caring people, the better. Ethel is a very friendly and good-humoured dog and it’s a real pleasure to be in her company, whether indoors or out and about.
She knows at least 4 commands and enjoys playing, being made a fuss of, being groomed and generally being in the thick of things. She likes people very much and will even allow complete strangers to stroke her.
Ethel would be suitable for a household where any children were aged 10+ and very kind and respectful to elderly dogs. Like most dogs, Ethel would be certain to chase after cats, so she needs to live in a home where there aren’t any to chase.
She seems to be reasonably friendly towards other dogs that she meets, so she might possibly be able to live alongside another dog. The dog would need to be brought down to Derby RSPCA Centre to meet Ethel and see how they got on together.
Ethel is a very, very pleasant little dog indeed and extremely good company. She fully deserves to see out her life in a warm and loving home where walks and play are sufficient for her needs and where everyone adores her.
9Jan2009 | RSPCA Derby and District | READ MOREBarney – 6 year old male Jack Russell Terrier
Barney (ref 39d) is a very confident and outgoing 6 year old white and brown male Jack Russell Terrier. He arrived at Derby RSPCA Centre when his last owners decided that they no longer wanted to own a dog and got rid of him. He is a very characterful, busy and alert little dog who is friendly towards people and who loves to keep a beady, supervisory eye on everyone in the household.
Barney knows at least 3 commands, is house-trained and would be suitable for a quiet, grown-up home with dog-knowledgeable owners who are prepared to show plenty of love, patience and understanding to a slightly eccentric little dog.
He is a very lovable little fellow but he doesn’t like the company of other dogs, so he needs to be rehomed as the only pet in the house. Being a Terrier, he would of course be certain to chase after cats, rabbits and other small animals.
Barney likes to have people around to keep him company, because being left on his own makes him very unhappy, so he needs to go to a home where there will generally be somebody on the premises to make certain he doesn’t get lonely and upset. He enjoys playing, especially with toys, and like all terriers is a lively little lad who relishes his walks and the opportunity to investigate interesting scents.
This sparky little chap will make a scintillating addition to any dog-experienced and suitably active adult household which can offer him all the play, exercise and regular walks he needs and let him know exacty where he fits into the family hierarchy without treating him like a lapdog or a baby.
Jack Russells are a very long-lived breed, so Barney could easily provide his new owners with at least another 10 years of furry-faced friendship, fresh air walks and fun.
11Dec2008 | RSPCA Derby and District | READ MOREBuddy – 1 1/2 – 2 year old male Cross-Breed
Buddy (ref 174d) is a 1 1/2 – 2 year old very happy and cheerful young male crossbreed with a tremendously beautiful barley-coloured coat. He was brought to Derby RSPCA Centre because his last owner had abandoned him. He is a friendly and enthusiastic young dog who already knows one or two commands and who has masses of potential to be a very well-trained and obedient companion.

He is immensely likeable and his sheer joy of being alive is very infectious. He loves to mix with people and be stroked, groomed and made a fuss of. He adores walks and is absolutely fascinated by everything he can see, hear and smell. Buddy enjoys playing, both with people and with toys, but isn’t at all possessive and will let you take a toy from him if necessary.
He would be suitable for a household where any children were aged 10+ and very kind to animals. He seems to be basically okay around other dogs but can sometimes appear a bit excited because he hasn’t had much contact with them in the past and isn’t quite sure what he’s meant to do when he meets them.
At present he seems to be interested in cats rather than being aggressive towards them. But like most dogs he would be certain to chase after rabbits and other small furry creatures. Buddy is a lively and healthy young lad who needs an active home where he will get plenty of regular walks and fresh-air exercise as well as fun and games. He is a superb young dog, friendly and beautiful, and will bring lots of love, happiness and fun into the lives of his next owners.
25Nov2008 | RSPCA Derby and District | READ MOREBrutus – 5 year old male Collie cross German Shepherd
Brutus (ref 178d) is a gorgeous and very lovable tan-coloured Collie cross German Shepherd aged 5 years old. He was brought to Derby RSPCA Centre by an RSPCA Inspector. Brutus is a friendly dog but is also rather quiet, so he needs a home with people who will understand that in spite of being a lively-looking dog he is nevertheless a thoughtful and slightly reserved creature whose idea of a good time doesn’t necessarily include romping about and being surrounded by rowdy people. He loves to be stroked and fussed and also enjoys being groomed, probably for the same reason.

He is very friendly with people and likes to play, but doesn’t at present seem to be very interested in playing with toys, perhaps because he’s never had many or perhaps just because living here in kennels doesn’t put him in a very playful frame of mind. No doubt he’ll cheer up a lot and take more interest when he finds a new home. Brutus currently only seems to know 2 or 3 commands, but he is a highly intelligent dog and could certainly learn many more. He would probably enjoy being trained enormously.
He would be suitable for a household where any children were aged 10+, kind, sensible and respectful towards dogs. He will need owners who can not only provide him with plenty of walks and exercise but also with lots of games and interesting things to do, to keep his clever brain occupied. He would need to be the only dog in the home, because he doesn’t like the company of other dogs. He does however seem to ignore cats, but would be certain to chase after rabbits and other small furry creatures.
Handsome Brutus really is a superb dog and a very intelligent and thoughtful character too. He is very lovable indeed and possesses a huge amount of charm. If you can offer him the fresh air and exercise he needs along with plenty of love and understanding, he will offer you his lifelong loyalty and love.
24Nov2008 | RSPCA Derby and District | READ MOREMarley – 3 year old male Rottweiler
Marley (ref 157d) is an immaculate and friendly male Rottweiler with the classic black and tan coat aged approximately 3 years old. He was brought to Derby RSPCA Centre because his owners had to move house and owning a dog wasn’t a possibility in the place they were moving to. Marley is a pleasant, intelligent and obedient dog who knows at least 4 commands, possibly more, and should respond well to further training because Rottweilers excel at learning to follow commands and generally using their brains. Training will also help him to bond firmly with his new owner.
He thoroughly enjoys playing with toys, being stroked and being told how very handsome he is. He wags his stumpy tail a lot. Marley would be suitable for a household where any young people were aged 18+, sensible, kind to animals and respectful towards dignified dogs.
He is of course a lively and active dog who will need to be adopted by experienced dog-owners who are themselves active people. He will need plenty of walks, exercise and fun in the fresh air as well as plenty of absorbing things to do to keep his brain occupied. A bored Rottweiler with nothing to do is a very unhappy Rottweiler, so games, training and plenty of activity are vitally important.
Marley would need to be the only animal in the household, because he would chase after cats and doesn’t enjoy the company of other dogs. He is a thoroughly likeable chap and very friendly with it. Once he has settled into his new home, he should make a very loyal companion, an enthusiastic playmate and a firm friend for life.
20Nov2008 | RSPCA Derby and District | READ MORECosmo – 3 year old male Labrador
Lovely Cosmo (ref 156d) is a very friendly male Black Labrador. He was brought to Derby RSPCA Centre because his last owner was no longer able to own a dog due to a major change in personal circumstances. Cosmo is an adult dog whose age is not certain but whose personality suggests that he is still quite young. Like most Labradors he is a chummy, enthusiastic and playful chap who gets on well with everyone and wags his tail a lot.

He loves to play, both with people and with toys, and especially enjoys playing tug o’ war. His last owner doesn’t seem to have devoted much time to training him, so Cosmo currently only seems to know 2 or 3 commands, but he is a bright and trainable dog who should easily be able to respond to more training. In fact more training should help him to bond with his new owner and learn his place in the household. Cosmo would be suitable for a home where any children were aged 7+ and very kind to animals. He is a lively boy, so he will need active owners who can offer him plenty of exercise, regular walks and lots of fun in the fresh air. He appears to get along fine with other dogs and also with cats. Cosmo really is a superb dog who would fit easily into most homes. He will bring lots of love, happiness and fun with him. Expect large amounts of tail-wagging too.
Silas – 6 year old male Greyhound
Silas (ref 154d) is a 6 year old magnificent male black and white Greyhound. He was brought to Derby RSPCA Centre because he had been abandoned by his last owner. Like all Greyhounds, Silas is a fairly quiet creature, but he is also very friendly towards people and much more confident and outgoing than most other greyhounds, who can often need lots of reassurance. He especially enjoys being stroked and made to feel loved and wanted.
He likes to play, particularly with toys, and thoroughly enjoys playing games of tug when the opportunity presents itself. He only seems to be familiar with one command at present (‘heel’), but may know others or at least be able to learn them.
Silas would be suitable for a household where any children were aged 10+ and very kind to animals. He will need owners who have previous experience of dog ownership and who will see to it that he gets plenty of fresh air and exercise. He is a very fit dog who thoroughly enjoys his walks. However, Greyhounds are not high-energy dogs and do not require a large amount of exercise.
A new owner will need to remember that Greyhounds are sensitive animals who are very upset by loud noise, arguing and unpleasantness, so Silas will need to live in a quiet, peaceful, harmonious home where everyone gets on well with each other and where nobody will shout at him.
He will also need to be the only animal in the home, because he doesn’t enjoy the company of other dogs and (being a Greyhound) he would naturally chase after small furry creatures like cats and rabbits. He really is a very lovely chap and thoroughly deserves to spend the rest of his life in a home where everyone else is as quiet and friendly as he is.
5Nov2008 | RSPCA Derby and District | READ MOREBuster – 2 year old male Cross-Breed
Lovely Buster (ref 95d) is a 2 year old, very mild-mannered black and tan cross-breed. He was brought to Derby RSPCA Centre by an RSPCA Inspector. He is a very well-behaved dog who enjoys keeping company with people and is very friendly and relaxed.

He is also an intelligent dog who knows at least 5 commands and could easily learn more. He would probably enjoy being given more training, because he is a very attentive dog who seems to understand what you want him to do. He walks very well on the lead and obediently waits at the kerb before crossing the road.
Buster likes to play, both with toys and with people, and is a very calm and unflappable dog. He can even seem rather aloof at times, being almost the complete opposite of a bull in a china shop, but is nevertheless a very warm and lovable character who likes to socialise with the human race.
Buster would be suitable to live in an active household where any children were aged 15+ and kind and sensible. He doesn’t enjoy being pulled about, grabbed at and treated like a toy, so any young people in the household would need to behave respectfully towards him and love him for the quiet, thoughtful and sensible dog he is. He does however adore having his back scratched.
He would need to be the only pet in the household, because like most dogs he would chase cats and other small furry creatures. He also doesn’t enjoy the company of other dogs at all.
Buster is an extremely sound chap who needs a home-for-life with dog-lovers who can give him lots of walks and outdoor fun along with games that let him use his clever old brain. He really is a superb and very lovable dog who will make an excellent companion, best friend and key family-member for anyone who can give him all the love, care and exercise he deserves.
5Nov2008 | RSPCA Derby and District | READ MORETyler – 4 year old male Cross-Breed
Tyler (ref 169d) is a very handsome, friendly and chunky male cross-breed aged approximately 4 years old. He was brought to Derby RSPCA Centre because his last owner had abandoned him. He knows at least 3 commands and enjoys playing enormously. He is also a serious tail-wagger who simply revels in being made a fuss of.

He is a big strong dog and will require owners who can provide him with plenty of physical exercise as well as playing with him and thinking of ways to make life interesting for him.
Although he is such a friendly and cheerful fellow, he is definitely a dog who will need sensible owners who already have solid experience of owning large-breed dogs such as Mastiffs or Rottweilers. Tyler would be suitable for a household where any young people were aged 18+ and kind and respectful to dogs.
He would need to be the only animal in the home, because he doesn’t care for the company of other dogs and would be certain to chase after cats, rabbits and other small furry creatures. Tyler is an absolutely splendid dog and magnificent with it. If you can offer him the care, affection and dog-knowledgable home he needs, he may well be the perfect dog for you. He really is a very likeable character.
