Barnie – 18 month old male Spanish Mastiff

Barnie was originally bought as a puppy by his owners living in Spain. They moved to the UK last year along with Barnie, but sadly they are unable to continue caring for him due to ill health. Barnie is a Spanish Mastiff. Barnie is 18 months old and is a beautiful big boy! He is happy, fun-loving and very outgoing. He is happy to meet everyone and he loves affection. He’d happily sit on your knee if you let him!

Barnie is very puppyish and will require firm, consistent training. He has very little knowledge of basic commands and will require plenty of exercise and patience to settle for a training session. He is easily over excited and can jump up, and mouth you gently. He is not aggressive at all, he just doesn’t realise his own size and strength. Barnie will also need some lead work, as he is very strong. We are currently training him to walk in a more controlled way by using a headcollar, which seems to be working. Barnie has had a tough couple of weeks, where he has been passed round, and as a result is suffering from separation anxiety so he’d like a home who can dedicate some time to reassuring him and continuing with his training.

Barnie loves other dogs, and loves to play so he would be able to live with another dog. Barnie does get very over excited and can bark at other dogs when meeting them on a lead or in the park, so further training will be needed to help him control his excitement which can come across as quite scary for other dogs (and owners!). Barnie will make a fantastic dog once he has learnt his basic training and improved his social skills. He is loving and good-natured, and would make a great family pet. He cannot be homed with cats or small furries, but can live with older children and teenagers. He is not suitable for young or nervous children due to his size and strength. Barnie is fostered in Derbyshire.
