Ben – 9 year old male Labrador Cross

Ben is a 9 year old Labrador cross male, also known as our gold plated cross-breed! He has cost the rescue £1,500 to get right, but he was worth every penny!  He was spotted in a Welsh dog pound and he was due for euthanasia on 2 June 2008. Luckily down to some dedicated volunteers we managed to get him here to Surrey 24 hours before he was due to die!

Ben was picked up as a stray and never claimed. On arrival at the pound a very nasty hernia was discovered which the pound vets operated on. Unfortunately they did not do the operation very well and when they pushed everything back to where it should have been they didn’t sew the hole up and it all fell out again!
When he got here he had to have an emergency operation to push his intestines and bladder back up into his abdomen.

The poor boy was in agony for the first couple of days of being here. What with half his guts hanging out to start with and then having to endure the pain of a second surgery so soon after his last, you would think that he would just crawl into a corner. Not Ben! He stayed affectionate and loving all the way through and didn’t complain once.

Ben had his staples out and his first vaccination about two weeks ago. Then he took a turn for the worst and had to be rushed to the emergency vet on a Friday morning at 1am because of a nasty infection that had built up in his abdomen. It had burst and he was very ill. I thought he was going to die. However, after a shot of painkillers and an antibiotic, plus a further visit to the vets the next day, he was then put on a long course of antibiotics which did the trick.

The vets have given him the all clear to go to a new home, so even though I think this dog is the best thing since sliced bread, to make room for the next unwanted I need to move him on to the home he deserves. Lots of attention, lots of cuddles and lots of affection (which he will relish!) He will have his second vaccinations before he leaves here.

Ben is great with people and very calm round children. Because of his age I am looking for older children only (10 +). He is fine with other dogs and good with cats and takes no notice of smaller caged animals.
He is clean in the home and loves to sleep snuggled under a duvet!

He will need a minimum of 5 foot fencing all round the garden. Ben is happy to be left for short periods of time (4 hours maximum please). He also likes to wash faces, so I guess one of the stipulations of rehoming is that it has to be someone who doesn’t mind having a face wash!
