Benji - 2 1/2 year old male Labrador cross Whippet

Benji is a 2 1/2 year old Labrador cross Whippet male who was signed over to RSPCA care for rehoming via the Inspector as she’d been on the case for a few months. Benji was quite often left ouside in all weathers or shut up in the kitchen. Benji is neutered, micro-chipped, wormed, flead, 1st vaccination and health checked, he is in fair condition but a bit on the lean side and his coat isn’t in brilliant condition.

He’s very friendly and was very well behaved with the vet but he appears a bit nervous of new people at first and was hiding behind the Inspectors leg but soon came round. He’s good with children (who were very young-less than 3 years) and is also used to living with and good with cats and other dogs. Benji is quite bouncy and could do with a bit of training but did sit on command and seems to respond well to praise. He’s ok on the lead, pulls a bit but not too bad.

Benji has proven himself to be a bit of an escape artist and can jump very high so fencing of minimun 6ft height is a must. The Inspector said he is apparantly house-trained, when he was in the house during the day he did not toilet but since he was kept in kitchen at night he has been weeing, the poor dog has been in and out and ‘kept’ in different ways at different times so this would affect any dogs toilet habits, in a new home with a normal routine he should be fine.

He’s perhaps too bouncy to be homed with young toddlers, unless by an experienced dog owner who is used to this. He deserves to be shown a normal doggie life, regular routine walks, a cosy bed to sleep in, more importantly company and a loving home. He will need a kind and experienced owner to help him settle in nicely, even with new cats or dogs he may need time.

He was a bit nervous at first and had a little bark but after about 10 seconds was coaxed to the door for me to put the flexi lead on. He seemed a bit nervous of the handle of the flexi and I don’t know his background but wouldn’t be surprised if he had been hit previously. We happily left the kennel compound, he was quite keen but didn’t pay any attention to the other dogs at all.

We walked for a very long time, nearly an hour I guess and he was wonderful. He enjoyed being on the flexi and having a good prance around (he moves very elegantly so that must be the greyhound genes in him) He didn’t really pull much but that might be because he enjoyed the freedom on the flexi.

Whenever I stopped he returned to me, he answers to his name very well and returns. He is as soppy as a dish cloth and absolutely harmless. He is very affectionate and I am covered in muddy footprints where he kept jumping up at me. Now this wasn’t an over excited jumping up it was more of an affectionate or affection seeking jumping up, he just wanted to be very close.

Absolutely lovely dog and I almost sneeked him in the boot to bring home. He is a real “Companion” dog you know, the opposite of a Spaniel! He loves holding hands by the way!
