Black Angel – 2 year old female Labrador Cross

Black Angel is a two year old large Labrador cross. This is possibly the bravest dog I have ever met and being a small part of her journey has been a gift. Angel was on a kill list of twenty dogs in a ‘shelter’ in Romania. We took her and a couple of others as they were the last on the list with no offers to be saved. We took them because we couldn’t let them be left behind to die. When Angel arrived it was quickly apparent that she had suffered badly at the hands of humans. There are levels of fear in these dogs and her level was right up there. I don’t know what’s happened in her life but that depth of fear isn’t developed from nowhere. She’s evidently had puppies and my guess would be that she has seen and been unable to prevent bad things happening to them. Her fear of human hands could be down to the dog catchers or other abusers during her life on the street.

Wherever she’s been and whatever she’s seen and endured, the conflict inside her within her first few days here was played out right before my eyes and I don’t think I’ve ever seen such courage in a dog. Within days her need to love and be loved was winning over the ingrained fear. It started with her just being pleased to be around me but keeping her distance. Quickly it became a full body wag and following me everywhere, she would dance up to me and around me and nibble the ends of my fingers but would still cower and bow her head if I stroked her. To see such a beautiful, noble dog cowering to the floor is an image that no dog lover can bear to see and after all these years in rescue this dog got right to the heart of me.

So here we are just a two week whirlwind later and we are looking for an extra special home for our girl. She needs another dog to play with and would be better in a home with no young children. She’s as good as gold around the home and just needs a little extra patience in the first few days. I cannot tell you why this dog is so special. I can just tell you that she is and she deserves the very best future.
