Lurcher Cross

Stanley - 8 year old Male Greyhound cross Lurcher

Stanley (ref 112d) is an 8 year old, very dapper white and brown male dog who looks like a Whippet but is actually believed to be a cross between a Greyhound and a Lurcher. He was handed over to Leicester RSPCA Centre by his last owner, then transferred up to Derby RSPCA Centre.

Stanley is a very intelligent and obedient dog who knows at least 6 commands and walks beautifully on the lead. He is very friendly towards people and firmly believes that there is no such thing as being stroked too much. No matter how much you stroke him, he’ll still be up for even more of it.

His last owner doesn’t appear to have played with him, only walked him, so he doesn’t quite know what you’re supposed to do with toys. He should however be able to learn to play, if his new owners introduce him to the idea very gently.

Stanley would be suitable for a household where any children were aged 15+, kind and respectful towards dogs. The very last thing Stanley needs is to be treated like a toy and tugged at and pulled about. He is a quiet and sensitive dog with a lot of dignity, so he needs a quiet and calm home with a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere, where preferably he would hardly ever be left on his own. It is very important to Stanley to have the company of friendly adult human beings.

Being a sighthound, he would definitely chase cats and rabbits, so he would not be able to live alongside any. He would need to be the only dog in the home, because he doesn’t like the company of other dogs at all.

Stanley really is very good company and a thoroughly nice chap. Could you offer him the loving, caring and peaceful home-for-life he needs, with plenty of lovely walks to keep him fit, healthy and happy? If so, you can count on Stanley to be your loyal friend for the rest of his life.

Tally - 18 month old female Lurcher cross Collie

Tally is an 18 month old Collie cross Lurcher female, her owner has given her up for rehoming. Being a Hancock dog, she has tattoos in both ears and has also been micro-chipped. She’s not very tall - maybe 23-24 inches - and is quite chunky in build. She is very loving and has obviously had some training as she knows basic commands and walks well on a lead.

She seems to get on well with most dogs, but can be a bit bossy - she may be best being an only dog or living with a male dog. She loves kids and I’ve been told she hates cats. Tally will be spayed and vaccinated as soon as possible.

Sasha - 14 month old female German Shepherd cross Lurcher

Sasha is a 14 month old female German Shepherd cross Lurcher. She’s vaccinated and neutered and has had 4 homes already in her short life. We know she’s not cat friendly and not good with chickens or small furries etc but she loves people and seems fine with most other dogs. She’s very strong on the lead and I would recommend a Halti is used on her as it seems to calm her.

Chief and Katy - 3 year old male and female Collie cross Lurchers

Chief (male) and Katy (female) are 3 year old Collie cross Lurcher siblings who have been kept in a shed all their life till their owner died. Because of this lack of socialisation, Chief is extremely nervous - mainly of heavy traffic- and Katy’s a bit better but can still be skittish. They’ve been with us a few months now and we’re gradually getting them acclimatised to the Real World but they’re still very much a “work in progress”.

Their ideal home would be somewhere with a large secure garden with a kennel run, so they can gradually get used to going into a house over a long period and someone with a LOT of time and patience and experience in working with nervous dogs. It’s very much “3 steps forwards, 2 steps back” at the moment, but progress IS being made!

Benny - 4 year old male Lurcher Cross

Benny is about 4 years old and is a lovely male Lurcher cross. Benny is a very gentle, good natured chap who gets on well with his foster family. He is very good with the family’s children so he will probably be fine with older dog-savvy kids.

Benny does not like cats at all or other small furries, but is okay with other dogs once he has got to know them. Benny stands about 24″ high. He is clean in the house and very obedient out and about.

He is okay when left but prefers it not to be for too long. Benny is not a boisterous Lurcher, he likes to sleep a lot and go for quiet gentle walks. Benny will make someone a fantastic pet, the perfect addition to any family.

Wisp - 2 year old male Bearded Collie cross Lurcher

Wisp is a female pale fawn and tan rough-coated Bearded Collie cross Lurcher aged approximately 2 years old. Wisp is not cat friendly and may have been involved in an incident involving sheep and so cannot be rehomed where she can come into contact with livestock.

ll_wisp.jpg

I would prefer her to be rehomed with Pilot (also featured on DogsBlog.com) if possible as he relies on her for confidence. Wisp has come to us after being found by a dog warden in dodgy circumstances. She is vaccinated, neutered, micro-chipped and de-fleaed. She has a lovely nature, can a be a tad jealous if you’re trying to do something with another dog though, but all in all she’s a total babe.

Sandy - 12-18 month old male Saluki cross Lurcher

Who is going to make Sandy’s life change for the better? Sandy is a 12 - 18 month old Saluki cross Lurcher who came to us from Ireland where he had been found wandering as a stray. After a six-month stay in a general rescue, GRWE were asked to help as there was no realistic prospect of him finding a home in Ireland. And so he made the crossing to us.

We recently removed Sandy from the re-homing section as we felt that his injured leg needed some more investigation. He has had x-rays on his leg and he was referred to a specialist orthopaedic veterinary surgeon for some more investigations as it seemed likely that Sandy might need to have an operation on his leg. After a thorough investigation the vet is now satisfied that this is not necessary.

Sandy has put on a little weight, his coat has improved and he has a jaunty spring in his step too. He is very happy in his foster home where he spends his days playing, playing and playing some more!! We are delighted he is now ready for re-homing. Sandy needs some canine friends to keep him occupied and has tested friendly with cats.

He is happy to be left for periods as long as he has the company of other dogs. Sandys’ hatred of cars is a little improved, but he still gets travel sick and needs bags of reassurance whilst in the car. This is something which will need to be worked on and we will of course help Sandys’ new owner with plenty of help and advice. Sandy is a super dog who will make a great pet for a lucky Saluki lover!

Jet

Jet is a 10 month old black Lurcher cross Collie male, Jet is a nice young Lurcher who is best homed as an only pet. He was obtained along with his littermate to replace a much-loved pair of old Lurchers who had died. The gesture was  well-intentioned but re-inforces the message that dogs should never be given as surprise presents.

dcc_jet.jpg

The gentleman needed time to grieve. The puppies ended up with the daughter, and she had them neutered because they did not get on. He is very friendly with people and good with children, but has issues with other pets. This does not present a problem when out walking but he would prefer not to share his home with any other pets. He is fine around livestock, travels well and is house-trained.

Leon

Leon is a Lurcher cross (German Shepherd cross Greyhound) aged approximately 1 year old. He is exceptionally intelligent and affectionate. He is a handsome, athletic, medium sized, short haired dog (22 inches at shoulder) is ideal for obedience/agility or Canine Cross Country racing.

He is perfect for training as he loves to learn. He needs a mature, calm, patient owner who is experienced with handling dogs who has loads of time and love to bring out the best in this super dog - he could go to the top with the right owner. He has also now started obedience training and some agility work over jumps and walls.

He is very affectionate and loyal with people, good with kids but would prefer a home with older kids, no toddlers or babies please. He is not destructive, calm around the house. He is not safe with livestock, chases sheep and cats, he also gets stressed with new dogs but happily lives with my dogs now he is used to them and never causes fights, would like to live with a submissive non-aggressive dog or bitch that he can have as his friend. He is also neutered, wormed, flea treated and cured of kennel cough.
