Charlie – 6 year old male Lurcher

Charlie is a 6 year old male Lurcher who is now ready to find a VERY special patient home. Charlie hasn’t to this point had the easiest life. When he arrived he was seriously ill with kennel cough that was progressing to pneumonia, he was severely stressed and had very little trust. Due to this when placed under threat he did show he was more than happy to use his teeth if pushed. However, Charlie is now fully well, fully settled and adores us all here at the kennels very much and has gone from staff walks only to walking with the volunteers. He is no longer the angry and scared worried little dog he was. Charlie though needs a experienced home, one that understands that whilst settling and gaining confidence he needs to be left alone, not pushed, not overly stimulated and forced to adapt. A quiet home willing to let him find his feet in his own time.

Charlie is fine with other dogs but we feel he would be happier either as an only dog with someone around all or most of the time or with a older female who is quiet and calm. Charlie was living as part of a group with the bitch he was mating with, one of his sons and another male dog also before but we feel that it was all a bit to much for him and he felt under undue pressure. Charlie will NOT be rehomed with children and is not cat friendly. This boy has worked so hard to overcome his fears and build his confidence that he needs calm, patient and quiet handling to allow him to do just that. Charlies other fear is the vets so again any family needs to understand there is work to be done there. Visits would help muzzled without anything being done to allow him to adapt to the environment.

Although is sounds like I am selling Charlie as a mainly difficult dog he is actually a delightful, loving and sweet character but he needs a new owner that understands there can be a flip side when frightened. This boy deserves some security and surety in his life now and we very much hope that a special home can be found that will understand his need for control, relaxation and full on happy retirement.

Charlie is vaccinated, kc vaccinated, de flead, de wormed, microchipped and castrated. We allowed Charlie to work through his issues before castration with us and since he was finally neutered he has again settled beautifully and flourished. We are so proud of this lad, he has embraced everything offered here, learnt to trust, learnt to love and be loved but we can not take him any further now on his journey and he does not deserve a life in kennels.

Greyhound Gap
Greyhound Gap is a small independent charity set up to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome greyhounds and lurchers who find themselves in a ‘put to sleep’ situation in UK pounds. Funded almost entirely by donations, we rehome around 150 dogs each year. We can have around 40-50 dogs at any one time in our kennels based in Kidsgrove, Stoke on Trent and a further 30-40 in foster homes. Greyhound Gap operates on a national basis so our dogs can be homed throughout the UK subject to a suitable home visit being carried out. If you are interested in adopting a dog from Greyhound Gap, we would ask that in the first instance you could take a few moments to complete our pre-adoption questionnaire if you have not already done so: http://www.greyhoundgap.org.uk/our-dogs/pre-adoption-questionnaire
