Conker

Conker is a 9 year old Collie cross Labrador who has had a very bad life. He was rescued from Ireland after being handed into a vets as a stray who was never claimed. It is very obvious that Conker has had an extremely abusive life and because of this he has fears about certain situations.

Conker is a very misunderstood dog and currently lives at my rescue in Surrey along with 6 other dogs, 7 cats and many smaller caged animals. Other animals are not the issue with Conker. He is very good with them. Unfortunately because of his previous home he can get very scared of people and if he feels threatened can lunge at people.

He does this if anyone looms over him. The majority of the time he is a good boy and a happy chap, but because he has cataracts he can get confused and 9 years of severe abuse is hard to shift. He is sensitive to having his belly and back touched (we have worked out that this is where he was probably beaten and kicked) but I am working on that using soft utensils to help his rehabilitation such as feather dusters and long handled soft paint rollers(!). It sounds terrible but he really is a lovable dog underneath his scared exterior.

Conker needs an experienced Collie owner who is confident about handling dogs. Due to his troubled past and the treatment he has suffered, we’re looking to rehome him into an adult only household and for vet trips I tend to muzzle him (this will be provided with him) although he hasn’t shown any vets any aggression for vacciations or when they were doing his pre-med for castration.

Conker would suit an older couple who have lots of time on their hands and who are willing to let him come round in his own time and also someone who understands how long it can take to let a dog come round who has known terrible handling and cruelty from a human.

He has been in my rescue for about a month now and has shown just one incident when he warned a family member off because he felt threatened. Conker is fully vaccinated, microchipped and castrated. A homecheck will be required. He is living in Old Coulsdon, Surrey at the moment.
