Dexter is a three year old curly coat retriever type dog. When his mother was rescued from the streets of Romania during an unusually hot summer, she was heavily pregnant and severely dehydrated. She gave birth to six puppies just days later all boys and Dexter was one of those boys. We brought the whole family to the UK and all were rehomed. Sadly Dexter has recently been returned to us due to his owners poor health and inablity to exercise him sufficiently. Dexter is quite an insecure dog who likes to be able to see his loved ones or better still to be near them.
He is learning well that he needs to stand on his own two feet more often and that the world is not going to collapse around him if he is left. He needs firm rules and boundaries and responds well when he knows what is expected of him in time this will improve his confidence in being on his own. He also needs to be taken into social situations rather than being kept away from them. Twenty minutes walk a day is simply not enough for this boy he needs at least an hours run out every day for the mental stimulation as well as the exercise.
Dexter is not a difficult dog, he simply needs a bit of training and someone who confronts his insecurities rather than panders to them or keeps him away from them. He can live happily with other dogs and would benefit from a playful confident dog of a similar age. He is weary of children but could become accustomed to children of eight years and over who understand he needs time to adjust. Once this dog knows you he is a perfect companion, great company, good fun and very affectionate and rewarding.
