Duke – 5-6 year old male Lurcher
Duke is a gorgeous big handsome lurcher (about deerhound size) who is thought to be around 5 or 6 years old. He is an easy boy to live with – and an easy boy to love. He loves his meals, walks, naps, and cuddles and as long as he gets enough of each he’s a happy boy !

He is currently living with two older sight-hounds and although he is several years younger, he is very happy to follow their lead and will happily nap the day away between walks – maybe waking up for a bit of a play with a cuddly toy, and of course to remind you it’s teatime!
Duke came into the care of DAWG from an Irish pound, very underweight and in terrible condition. He is feeling a lot better now, but should blossom even further with time and care in his new home. If you can offer him the loving home he needs, he will repay you by giving you his whole heart. If you want a dog who will be a truly loyal and relaxed companion, Duke is perfect.

He might make a great ‘office dog’ (as long as you have space for a big dog bed, or a spare sofa!) as he adores people and is happy to spend most of the day snoozing. Duke is now very relaxed about being left for a few hours in the company of other dogs, but he was quite clingy to start with in his foster home, so we think a home with owners who are out all day might be a bit too much for him.

Duke is currently living in a house with six cats, and ignores them. He could live with a confident cat or cats in his new home as long as he is introduced carefully. Duke is also good with horses.
Loves people of all sizes! Although Duke is not living with children, he seems to love everyone and has shown no nervousness around
children he has met. He is perhaps a bit big and clumsy for very little ones, or to be around very elderly and frail people as he might knock them over, though he certainly wouldn’t mean to.

Duke will walk nicely on a loose lead once you have got started on a walk, though he does get excited at the start of a walk and can pull quite hard then!
Duke enjoys a run with other dogs, and doesn’t stray too far away when off the lead. He also likes to pop back regularly to check in with you when walking (and if possible, have a quick cuddle!). His recall
still needs more practice before he will reliably come back on the first call, particularly if distracted, but this is improving.
Would love a home with other dogs. Duke loves other dogs and would definitely prefer a home with one or more doggy friends. He finds meeting new dogs quite exciting! Sadly, he doesn’t seem to realize quite how big he is, so he can be a bit alarming to start with for smaller and nervous dogs, so his new owner will need to be aware of this.

That said, Duke has met a number of small dogs, including a whippet and some Jack Russell terrier crosses, and got on OK with them. He has already learned to live with cats, he should get better at interacting appropriately with smaller dogs as he gets more practice.
Duke is house trained, and knows how to ‘sit’ on command. He travels well in the car, and is very relaxed about wearing a muzzle when exercising off the lead.
Duke is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and has been wormed and flea treated. He is in a foster home in Cornwall, near Plymouth.
