Gizmo – 2 year old male Shih Tzu

Gizmo is a 2 year old male Shih Tzu had a phonecall one Friday afternoon, from a dog groomers in Lincolnshire. They had little Gizmo booked in for grooming, but when they saw just how bad his coat was, plus they could not get anywhere near him to groom him, as he was snarling and growling at them, and was ready to bite. His owner said he hated groomers, as he had been cut on his ear the last time he had been done over 12 months ago. It was obvious that they would be unable to help this lad and suggested that he be taken to a vets, sedated and shaved, as this was the only way to get him done. His owner was not too happy about this, and was concerned as to how much it would cost.

The groomer, rang the vet and was told that it would cost between £70 and £100, to which his owner said “I’m not paying that, I will have him PUT TO SLEEP” the groomers were so shocked by this, he told her, that it would cost that much to get him PTS. Worried that she would do something awful to Gizmo, the groomers refused to let her take him away and persuaded her to let him find a rescue that would take him, this she was happy to do. The groomer’s got her to sign a letter handing Gizmo over, and so he came to us.

On first meeting this little man, he was totally petrified of everything and everyone, and showed this by snarling and growling, and would have bitten you in an instant. From what the owner had to said to the groomers, it would seem that he has been kept outside with very little socialisation, he has only been fed on human food, and not brushed for over 12 months. The next morning, the kennels owner went into his kennel, and sat on the floor, he was giving it the growls and snarls, and at the same time came and lay by her side, obviously wanting affection, but afraid at the same time, then came the ball.

He just loves a ball, and as soon as he was playing, he forgot how scared he was, and she had become his best friend, sitting on her lap kissing her face, loving all the fuss he was getting. Next it was into the kitchen, to meet the others, again growls and snarls, but he soon came round with the ball. We decided to have a go at getting him clipped, as with the weather as hot as it was, this lad was really suffering, and his coat was matted to about 2″ thick. 3 hours later of clipping and cutting, he was transformed. Before we started, he could just about see through the hair that was hanging over his eye’s, and once that was cut away, it was as if a whole new world had opened up to him. Since he has been with us, he is a different dog, he is still wary of strangers, but is so much more happier now, and he adores the kennels owner, and cries everytime he see’s her.
