Amber – 1 1/2-2 year old female Rhodesian Ridgeback cross Labrador
Amber is a beautiful 1 1/2 – 2 year old female Rhodesian Ridgeback cross Labrador. Amber shows characteristics of both these breeds and they are rather visible in her appearance. Amber was brought to Animal Aid as she was being kept in boarding kennels following an eviction in her previous home.
Because Amber has been in kennels since a young age with no stable upbringing she has unfortunately developed some behavioural problems.
Amber was quickly rehomed by a couple with 2 other dogs but unfortunately their circumstances changed leaving them unable to continue with Amber’s training and socialization. Amber’s main problem is trust. She is very wary of new people and situations.

At first Amber would bark and cower when she was approached by a stranger but as she has gained confidence she will now lunge at them and sometimes nip. Amber does not do this aggressively; it is more of a puppy thing that she has carried on into adulthood. Amber will need intensive training and would benefit from a calm household. Amber would also benefit from a young, well behaved dog to guide her.
Amber’s puppy like behaviour and enthusiasm is developing into over excited aggression.

Here is what the lady who adopted Amber has said about her:
‘On a positive note, from getting to know Amber I feel she has the potential to be a brilliant dog but she needs intensive training from someone who is in a position to wait as long as it takes. She needs lots of socialising in public places and with visitors to the house. Amber also needs to be able to trust vets, which could take a while.
I feel someone with true dedication, lots of land and a young dog to chase around with would be an ideal environment. She needs plenty of exercise. Who ever adopts Amber will need to take her to training classes as soon as possible and probably meet with a behaviourist to learn how to deal with her aggressive (puppyish) tendencies and to get advice. I think she is going through puppyhood far too late as she is now very big and strong and she needs to learn her place in the household. She has very special needs and she should only be placed with someone who is aware of them and who is fully prepared to address them. She is a beautiful dog and I will miss her terribly’
Amber is a loving girl with those she trusts, she is housetrained and behaved well in the home. Amber is not going to be the easiest dog, but she needs help and the only way she will improve is if someone will give her a chance. Amber is not going to be able to do this in the kennel environment.
