Guido – 3 year old male Labrador Retriever

Hello, my name is Guido, I am a 3 year old, male Labrador. I came into the Mayhew because my owners felt they could not cope with my possessive nature over food and toys. I am now in a foster home and my foster dad is teaching me manners over food and toys. He is very kind but very firm with me and says I respond very well when I have clear guidelines. Already I know he is the leader and I let him take anything out of my mouth, whether it is food or toys. When I want to play I now get the tennis ball off the shelf and take it over to him and I never beg for food at the table anymore. I didn’t want to go for many walks when I first arrived as I love to sleep and was overweight but now we are building up the time we are out and I now love going to the park where I spend all my time swimming and fetching sticks out of the lake. I walk well on the lead and off the lead. I do like to jump up and say ‘hello’ when my foster dad stops to talk to people but I am learning to keep my four feet on the ground! I am also very good with other dogs and avoid any sort of trouble. Apparently I’m a real peacemaker!

I am very laid back in the house although I will bark a couple of times if people come to the house or I hear a strange noise outside but other than that I am a quiet boy. I am housetrained and will always let you know when I want to go out. I settle down nicely at night in my bed and I am good when left alone.

I am looking for a new lifetime home with experienced owners who will love me and will also be firm but fair with me, and give me plenty of guidance. My new guardians will either owned Labradors before or will have fully researched my breed type and will be willing to continue with my training as I love to learn. I could happily live with another dog and children from 16 years of age and upwards. I need a minimum of one to two hours off lead exercise daily. I would suit someone who works fulltime providing I had a dog walker or a friend to take me out so I am not left alone for longer than 4 or 5 hours without a break. My foster dad says I am very low maintenance, lots of fun and once I know the rules, I am very good at sticking to them. My new guardians will be taking on approximately a twelve year commitment, which must not be taken lightly.

Hope to see you soo, Guido
