Harry - 4 year old male Border Collie
Harry is a 4 year old male tri-colour Border Collie. He has had his first vaccination as fell behind, is due to be castrated, is microchipped, flead, wormed and has been health checked. Harry is being rehomed (direct from his current home as he won’t fare well in kennels) due to a personal change in the owners circumstances which means he is being left for 9 hours a day in the kitchen, he deserves more than this and so we are looking for a home where he has a better quality of life.
Harry is different from other dogs in that he has the ‘doggie equivalent of MS’ whereby he can’t control the movement of his back legs due to the message not getting from the brain to that area. He is not in any pain or discomfort, he’s a happy dog with it, it is a proprioception problem.
He has no muscle wasteage as he uses his legs and muscles, the most important factor to remember is that is it not a progressive problem, it’s remained stable since being a puppy and there will be no deterioration. There also is no expense as he does not need medication at all. As can be seen in the videos on the RSPCA Macclesfield site, he has little control over the movement but he is mobile and works with it.
Because of this we are looking for a special home whereby Harry has regular access and walks on grassy areas. We feel a small holding, farm or rural home with a large grassy garden or land where he can potter about to his hearts content during the day. He needs frequent grassy walks but not long walks where he can be off lead. We would like a home where there is someone at home a lot of the time, a clutter free environment, and especially not with slippery flooring!
He’s a very bright dog and loves to interact with you so stimulation is particularly important for him. He loves games of fetch and has a thing for sticks and footballs! As can be been seen in the videos when his mind is on other things his mobility is better. As with all long haired dogs he needs regular gentle grooming to help keep his coat clean and matt free but needs to be respectful of his condition at the same time.
He’s great with dogs, he loves to socialise and will happily introduce himself to other dogs of all shapes and sizes! He has a wonderful temperamant, he is so friendly, placid and affectionate he loves people including children, the local kids call round for him to play! He’s not lived a cat but he’s never shown any unsavoury interest in them.
Some of the above perhaps is a tall order but we need to get across that even though his condition may look disturbing to watch he is a very happy dog who can do all doggy things, he is not a burden but just needs to find the right home. He will bring so much happiness to the home, please give him a chance.
