Hogan – 6 month old male American Bulldog

Hogan is a 6 month old male American Bulldog who is a very special boy who was born deaf. He has been in foster for a few weeks now whilst we have been teaching him basic doggy sign language. He is a very bright and boy and a quick learner!

He is in foster with several other dogs, ranging from a small Chihuahua cross Terrier up to a large American Bulldog. He gets on great with all of them, although his play is fairly boisterous which is typical of the breed! He has not been cat tested, although we do not think he would have a problem as long as the cat was dog savvy. He adores children and will play for hours, but he does have an issue with snatching food which is being worked on, so dog savvy children over 8 years old only please.

Hogan does get a little anxious when you leave the room, and it is very important he understands you are leaving. We are working on this with signage and by leaving an item of our clothing with him. He will bark however, although he is not destructive. His bark is loud so be warned, obviously he cannot hear himself just how loud he is (same goes for his snoring)! You will need to either live in a detached house, or have very understanding neighbours. He will settle down but it takes a little while.

He sleeps in a crate at night, and settles down well. His house training is good, although he does still have the occassional accident.

At the moment he is let off lead, but only in an enclosed area and in the company of other dogs. We will shortly start introducing a vibrating collar to help with his recall when he is not directly facing us.

Hogan will need a bull breed or large dog experienced home ideally with another active dog, preferably a bitch. If we could find a home experienced with deaf dogs then even better. If not, he will need someone who is committed to further training and prepared to put in the time and effort needed with a deaf dog. That said, please don’t let his deafness put you off, he really is a fabulous dog with a lot of love to give – he gives the best cuddles ever!

All Hope Rescue dogs are neutered, vaccinated, wormed, flea treated and microchipped prior to rehoming. A homecheck will be required, and you will need to come and meet the dog with your own dogs and family.
