Jake – 11 year old male Whippet Cross

Meet Jake, this cracking little dog is a fawn 11 year old Whippet cross with tons of personality, a loving, kind nature and he wants nothing more than to find his second perfect family. You’d never guess his age from meeting him, but Jake is actually 11 years old and for this reason he has been overlooked many times for homing. He is more like a sprightly 7-8 year old to be honest – it’s always our volunteers who run out of steam first at playtime, never Jake – he skips after his ball like a gazelle – for hours on end given the opportunity!

He was with his first family since puppyhood, but sadly they have emigrated and were unable to take him with them. Jake has really missed having his people around, you can tell he was a very much loved family pet and the transition to kennels has been really tough on him. He just sparkles when he knows he’s coming out with you for a walk, or playtime or even just to come and sit in the caravan at the kennels and watch the world go by. Jake is house and crate-trained and his basic training is impeccable – he will even sit at a distance!

He then loves nothing more than coming inside for a snuggle and a snooze. Jake can’t decide if cuddles or toys are his favourite pastime so he would like a home that offers both please! He’s fit, active and although there are no guarantees, we’re sure he has a good few years to go yet and needs a lovely family of his own to share them with.

Jake needs a confident owner who will help him on the lead when he meets other dogs as he was very nervous when he first came to us, having been attacked not just once but twice when he was younger. However, Jake is now shaking off this part of his life and learning how to enjoy interacting with other dogs. He is doing really, really well both with our Greyhounds and also with some of our smaller canine volunteers (he especially likes Figgy the Jack Russell)! Jake’s confidence is growing all the time and during the day at the weekend, he now shares the kennel caravan with us and an assortment of other dogs! We always use a muzzle whilst we make the necessary introductions with a dog he hasn’t met before, but this time reduces on every occasion and his behaviour is becoming much more relaxed – he’s also starting to go off-lead in the enclosure with his new canine buddies! With this in mind, we think Jake has lots of potential to live with another dog, but would prefer any canine friends to be very calm and relaxed as he doesn’t enjoy being pounced on or pressurised. We know Jake really well and would be delighted to help and support a new home to get to know him and gain his trust in the same way – he tries so hard to please when he knows you will look after him and he doesn’t need to worry, it makes him an absolute pleasure to work with.

We know the right home is out there for this super little dog and the rewards will be tremendous.
