Jolly - 1 year old female Setter Cross

Jolly is a wonderfully endearing 1 year old Setter cross female who arrived to the Home as a stray in December 2007. Her colouring and markings are surely one of a kind, her white coat flecked with ginger hair. She is already neutered and will be micro-chipped before leaving Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

It’s fair to say that Jolly’s name gives a good indication of her character. She is a heart-warming companion for people, while also an energetic, somewhat scatty young lady. Don’t be fooled by this scattiness however, this is a clever girl who will easily manipulate situations to achieve what she likes. She has a sensitive side to her as well; sudden movements and noises will cause her concern. She loves people and will actively seek attention by sitting next to you or leaning on you. This appealing aspect of her nature will require that she lives in a home with more than one person to avoid potential over-bonding.

Jolly has spent time with the staff of the Behaviour Unit in order for us to investigate her interactions with other dogs. She has not had much opportunity to meet other dogs and as a result can be full-on when meeting them. Furthermore she doesn’t understand the body language displayed by other dogs and this can get her into sticky situations. We don’t envisage that Jolly will live with another dog as it will be of no benefit to her and there is a high risk of her becoming jealous over attention. A more minor, but still important issue is concerning her chase drive. There will need to be training in this area as joggers and cars are likely to prove tantalising targets for her.

With our concerns over dog-to-dog interactions and Jolly’s chase drive we hope to rehome Jolly to a quiet, more rural area what there is less of a chance of provoking and reinforcing negative behaviours. She will need a house with a garden for training and burn-offs and a home which could facilitate a “Jolly” area such as a utility room where she will feel happy to be left. She will want to follow owners from room to room so owners may wish to install baby gates within the home to work on this.

Jolly is looking for new owners who want a loving, affectionate pet required for Jolly. We are looking for a multi-caring house-hold with a maximum of 4 people for consistency. Owners should be enthusiastic about taking advantage of Jolly’s strong motivations for training and her eagerness to please by putting work into her. Owners should have owned dogs previously, ideally Collie types, and should feel confident in reading dog-to-dog interactions. If new owners are looking for a giggly non-problematic dog that they can easily socialize with other dogs then Jolly is not an ideal choice! Jolly could live with teenagers but small children will not be suitable due to her sensitivity to noise and movement and with her need for consistency.

Our Chief Executive has first-hand experience of Jolly’s company, while in the Home Jolly has been spending many days in the offices of the Chief Executive of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, Jan Barlow and her personal assistant, Emma Furlong. They volunteered the following insight into the effect Jolly has had on their environment: “Jolly has been an absolute delight to have in the office from Day 1. She amuses herself (and us for that matter) for hours by throwing around her toys like a bucking bronco. When she senses that she has your attention she will throw herself at you for a cuddle and would happily spend the whole day curled up on your lap given half the chance. She’s can be mischievous, but a great character to have around!”

New owners should be prepared to listen to and take advice from the Behaviour Unit regarding Jolly’s training requirements. Jolly is at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London. Please call the Behaviour Unit on 02076277884 if you are interested in Jolly, or email us on behaviourrehoming@dogshome.org and quote reference 2007/ 06127. Jolly will need some further training in her new home. To receive advice and guidance regarding this training from the Behaviour Unit staff that have worked with her, potential owners should be prepared to come into the Dogs Home for a minimum of two visits.
