Judy – 7 year old female Border Collie

This is the beautiful Judy, she is a 7 year old Border Collie from Ireland. Originally she was rescued two years ago from a house where a total of 14 dogs were living. The dogs were owned by a hoarding alcoholic and when the house was entered 7 of these dogs were found dead. They had starved to death. The man who owned them all was extremely cruel to the dogs and thought nothing of taking his temper out on these dogs which he did frequently. Judy and her 6 friends were rescued from these conditions and sent to a rescue.

For two years Judy stayed at this rescue. She became as settled as she could, but always had a limp on her back right leg. I was told that this was an old injury that could not be fixed. I was asked to take her, along with Boots because she had more of a chance of being homed over here than in Ireland. Seeing that she had been there for so long I thought it only fair to give her a space at the rescue and see if we could find her a loving home.

When Judy arrived, I was not happy with the diagnosis. She held the leg up all the time and if it did touch the floor then she would quickly lift the leg again. She went to a very good vet who had difficulty palpating her hip, so we agreed to take some xrays. What we found was shocking to say the least.

Judy had a broken femur (thigh bone). The femur was completely snapped in two and had naturally healed in the shape of a boomerang (that is the only way I can think to describe it!) Moving up the leg and the hip bone was also snapped in two. This has also healed at a bizarre angle. Moving back towards the pelvis and there were three breaks there which had not completely healed. The vet said that the level of agony this dog was in was off the scale.

The injuries that she had were horrendous enough and we had to make a quick decision. They could either re-break the legs and set them to heal properly or amputate the leg. The procedure of breaking the bones again would have meant another couple of weeks of pain for her and this is one thing that personally I could not bear the thought of, so we decided to go for amputation.

Judy will stayed at the vets on a drip as she lost a lot of blood and needed to keep her fluid levels up. The good news is that even though this operation took a massive three and a half hours, she came out of the op well and is now on the strongest pain medication possible.

Luckily dogs do heal quickly and the discomfort that she will feel over the next couple of days is necessary so that the rest of her life will finally be pain free and happy.

Judy will be ready for a new home once her leg has healed and the stitches are out (in approximately 2 weeks time). She is a shy dog and tends to stay away from the main noise of the house, although strangely likes to be involved by being in the same room as people. She just stays out of the way. Once her confidence builds with you then she likes gentle fusses, but does not push herself onto you.

She lives happily with other dogs, is great with catsand small caged animals and is fine with children. However, I would like her to go an adult household, although visiting kids are fine. She will need a fully enclosed garden and will need to be kept on the lead until she has bonded with her new owner. Judy needs time and understanding which is one thing she has had little of in her life.
