We met Kayo in November when we visited the Radauti public shelter in Romania. He was in the dark block, an old poultry barn with no windows and no natural light. This block was dimly lit by a single working light bulb and the stench was beyond anything I could put into words. Kayo had lived in this small step away from hell for two long years and Ioana, who attends the shelter to make sure the dogs eat every day, says in all that time she only ever saw him stand two or three times. He’s a shy boy that lived in terror of the other dogs and the people. When we fed the dogs that day he would not eat until I barricaded all the other dogs away from him because he was simply scared of being attacked for his food.

He arrived in the UK and into my care a few weeks later and would snap at me for the first couple of days. I persevered regardless picking him up with towels to protect my hands from his teeth and he was showered and groomed. He emerged like a butterfly, this stunning little dog and he learned really quickly in those two days that contact and interaction with me led only to nice things.

He’s now a comical little chap that wiggles his whole body and thumps his tail every time he sees me. He performs little happy dances at my feet until I pick him up and, although he does still pee a little in fear as I lift him, once in my arms he snuggles into my neck for me to kiss his face. He is simply adorable but still very much in the early stages of his development. He still has a lot of confidence to build and in the right home with the right amount of love and patience he will grow into the character he should have always had the courage to be.

Kayo lives ok with other dogs, but still has some issues over food. He needs an adult and quite calm environment. I envy the person that gets to watch him progress because it’s already clear to see that he is worth every effort.
