Nancy and Annie

Nancy and Annie are two Border Collies (mother and daughter) who were pulled off of death row in Ireland and will need a home together. Annie is 8 weeks old and Nancy is 2 years old. Annie has a condition called Anophthalmia. It means that she was born with no eyes. Nancy did have two other puppies with her. One was fine and the other one had just one eye.

An appeal was launched but all rescues asked in the UK agreed to take mummy and two sighted pups but refused the little girl with no eyes because they felt she would be too difficult to rehome. The other two puppies were placed in a rescue and I agreed to take Nancy and Annie.

Because Annie has never known any different she uses her other senses perfectly. She also uses mummy as a guide, hence why they have to go together. As Annie grows she will learn the layout of her home and surprise her new owner as to how well an animal can adapt to a disability.

Whoever adopts these lovely girls will need to consider their home and if it is suitable for a blind dog. For example, the new owner will have to have a garden and this would need to fully fenced with no escape holes. A sighted dog getting out the garden is bad enough, but if a blind dog were to escape then it could find itself in real danger.

There can be no ponds or steep drops (i.e. high steps). I would expect a minimum fence height of 6 foot (mum can see afterall!) and Annie would need to be walked onlead (possibly an extenadable lead or a training lead) otherwise a blind dog could easily wander off and get lost.

I personally have owned a blind dog and it is not as daunting as you might think. Annie has never known having sight so she is not going to miss it and is a happy and loving puppy. The dog will learn the layout of her home and house-training is just the same as with a sighted pup. Once they know where the door is then they get the idea very quickly.

Nancy loves her baby and is very bonded with her and they cannot be split up. Nancy will be spayed as soon as she comes into rescue and has had her first vaccinations, has been wormed and defleaed. She will have her second vaccinations before leaving us. She will also be microchipped.

Annie has had her first vaccinations and will have her second vaccinations before leaving us. She will be micro-chipped and will need to be spayed at about 5 months old. I am looking for an understanding home for these girls with someone at home for the majority of the day and no young children.

If you feel you can offer the total dedication that these girls need then please contact me. These girls are due to arrive on 25th April.
