Nelly - 5-6 year old male German Shepherd Cross

feature photo

Nelly is a 5-6 year old German Shepherd cross male, he is a dog much loved by his previous owner but who kept him shut away for extensive periods because of tenancy issues over ‘no animals’. The RSPCA stepped in and Nelly has come to the branch.

He was recently rehomed but once there, he demonstrated that his past is not fully known to us - clearly he had had a bad experience with a male human. He now needs a new home and is currently in a foster home while he patiently waits for his new forever home.

Certain men passing him with an object/tool in their hands cause Nelly to cower or alternatively hackles to be raised. This needs orebearance by a new owner, something the people that recently took him on cannot offer with their lifestyle, as much as they wish they could. They love Nelly very much and will happily talk to any new owner about their experiences with him.

He has been given a clean bill of health, has been treated against worms and fleas, vaccinated, neutered and micro-chipped.

Nelly is very well trained, very obedient - great recall - very gentle and loving with children, however we think he should be homed in a quiet environment, it’s a shame because he’s a real family dog.

But for his sake he needs to be with an experienced large dog owner, a rural home would be ideal where someone is at home, perhaps a retired couple or older experienced couple who work from home or part-time and have that forebearance and understanding and respect of dogs that have mal-treatment issues.

Nellie has been in his foster home for a month, he is wonderful, he has shown no issues whatsoever that he showed in the home he came back from, just goes to show in the right home, i.e. quiet and calm with not a lot going on how a dog like Nellie can settle and be happy.

He’s very obedient as always, his recall is excellent, apart from when he sees a sheep but we’re working on that! He’s great with other dogs, he socialises off lead with them at training classes too, not that he needs them but Nellie loves it. He has come across various men in different houses/situations with no problems at all. He greets people who come to the door in the correct way too!

He’s not shown any issues over his food, he loves his food and relishes meal times which is great. He did sneakily chew a hole in the pocket of a jacket while he was alone to get at the treats lol!

He’s not allowed on the sofa, he has sneaked up a couple of times and has been told to get off which he does, on a couple of occasions his fosterer has returned and Nel has given her ‘that guilty look’, she’s felt the sofa and it’s been warm…a clever dog who hears the key in the door and removes himself promptly!

We are very pleased with his progress indeed and realise that all he needs is a quiet home in the country. He brings so much joy and is a dream to have around. We are very proud of Nellie!
