Nikki – 13 year old female Labrador Retriever

This is Nikki and she is a 13 year old female Labrador Retriever. She came into the Mayhew after her owner was hospitalised and could no longer look after her. She is now being fostered and enjoying all the home comforts her foster mum provides. She has settled really well and She is calm in the house. She is very good on lead and just trot along checking out the neighbourhood. She goes to the park every day where she potter around happily, although sometimes she doesn’t hear her foster mum calling her if she has having a good old sniff but she always come back in time. She says hello politely to other dogs but she is no longer interested in chasing around with them and same with people, while she is very friendly, not at all pushy. She would happily live with cats.

She is very clean in the house apart from a few puddles on the first night. When she is not snoozing she enjoys a short, gentle game of ball in the living room and she loves being stroked. She will nuzzle her foster mum for a nice soothing head scratch yet she is not one of those pesky dogs who are all over you. She likes to sleep in the bedroom on her comfy dog pad but she is very peaceful and doesn’t try to jump on the bed. Although she likes company she can be left on her own for three or four hours without making a fuss therefore she would happily suit someone who worked fulltime providing she is not left alone for longer than four hours without a break e.g. by hiring a dog walker, pet sitter, or coming home at lunch time etc. She is very good in the car.

She is looking for a loving retirement home with people who want an easy going companion and won’t expect too much from her. She is the ideal dog for a more mature owner or a nice calm household with a settled routine. She would like someone who will give her two gentle thirty minute off lead walks daily in the park or an open space where she can sniff around on her own or simply relax on the grass. She is not bothered about doggy company but she could live with another mature dog if they gave her, her own space and introductions went well. She could also live with children of twelve years and upwards. She would prefer not to live with younger kids, though visiting children would be welcomed. She has had her legs and hips x-rayed at The Mayhew which showed no problems at all but she does however feel at little stiff in the mornings so need to live in a house or ground floor flat. All she really wants is a place to call home where she can appreciate the finer things in life like eating, snoozing and a whole lot of love.
