Pepe is a cute 14 year old Chihuahua boy who is in a foster home in Powys, Mid Wales, waiting for someone to offer him a permanent home. Pepe is OK to be left on his own for an hour or two, but not any longer than this. He likes to have someone around. Pepe is a very friendly boy and always happy to meet other dogs. He would probably enjoy and benefit from living in a household with a gentle dog. We don’t know for sure how Pepe would be with cats, but his foster carer has a small parrot that Pepe finds very interesting and would try to catch, so he might chase a cat.
Pepe is quiet and very gentle, but he does not really like being picked up, although he does tolerate it. Young children might not understand this and might want to pick him up and treat him like a toy because he is so small. We therefore recommend that any children in Pepe’s new home should be aged over 10. Pepe is not interested in going for walks, but he will potter in the garden in dry or warm weather if you are out with him. He would probably follow another dog though.
Pepe’s favourite pastimes are eating his meals, having tiny cubes of cheese as training rewards, cuddling and sleeping. He isn’t really frightened of anything, but he prefers not to be picked up and he will back away or hide under the table if he senses you intend to pick him up. However, he does have to be taken outside regularly for toileting, so this is not completely avoidable. He likes lots of attention and to see that someone is around. He is happy to meet visitors and have a cuddle with them. He is quite a perky little chap and will happily explore his new home, but a high-energy household would not suit him. His new owner will need to be able to bend to gently pick him up.
Pepe is vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea treated. He hasn’t been neutered as our vet advised against it due to Pepe’s age and the fact that he has a heart murmur. However, there are no signs of heart failure, and no treatment is needed at this time. He has an inguinal hernia (soft visible lump in his groin) which is not troublesome and no treatment is required. Pepe has age-related cataracts, but can see, and he is also a little deaf. He only has 4 teeth, but loves his food and needs a soft, plain diet.
