Pluto – 2 year old male Greyhound

Pluto is a 2 year old ex-racing Greyhound whose owner decided he no longer wanted him. He was going to be euthanized before luckily getting intercepted by one of our volunteers. Pluto is a lovely big black and white boy who sadly hasn’t received the care he should have. He is lacking in both weight and condition and will need plenty of good food before he is back in top form.

Pluto is a lovely boy, very quiet and undemanding. He is gentle and delicate about asking for attention, and then soaks it up so gratefully. He is very laid back and tends to stand back and observe rather than getting in the thick of things. We feel what he really needs is to go to a home environment where he can experience all the comforts of the home life and have a chance for his little character to develop. There is a cheeky chappie waiting in there somewhere! Pluto gets on very well with our other greyhounds and causes no fuss. He has not been tested with small dogs or cats but these can be carried out prior to adoption if required. Often ex-racing greyhounds take a bit of socialisation work to realise smaller breeds are in fact dogs as they would never have seen them before.

Like most greyhounds, Pluto will not need a huge amount of exercise. He will be content with two 20min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch his legs offlead in a secure area once or twice a week. Pluto has not yet been in a home environment, so new owners will need to be a bit understanding during the first couple of weeks and allow him time to settle and discover things at his own pace. It usually takes 10-14 days for new greyhounds to start to settle down in a home, and really all they need is a bit of time and patience. We don’t think it will take him too long to find the sofa!

In general greyhounds are calm, mannerly dogs that are well used to being handled. They can fit very well in to a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly. Greyhounds also don’t shed as much as other more popular dog breeds and this can make them suitable to live with allergy sufferers.

This gorgeous boy is currently being kennelled in Ireland, and can be transported via Kerry Greyhounds to the UK or Europe if a suitable home offer comes up. This will be organised and paid for by Kerry Greyhounds, and we ask only for a donation to help cover costs. He is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea’d and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure.

If you are interested in fostering or adopting Pluto, please email me on tamakin_84@yahoo.co.uk for our adoption application and information pack. Thanks!

*Update August 2010*

Pluto is still waiting to be adopted, and is continuing to improve while he does so. He has put on weight now and is a much healthier, happier hound than when he first arrived. He has also started wagging his tail a lot more too. Pluto is a favourite in the kennels and a joy to be around. He is such a soft sweetie-pie and we can’t wait to see him flaked out on someone’s sofa.
