Red – 2-4 year old female Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Red is a female Staffordshire Bull Terrier approximately 2-4 years of age. Red came into our care after police had removed her from a property where suspected illegal activity was taking place. Red is a real big softie who craves attention from people. She just wants to be with people far more than anything else, to the point that she foregoes toys in favour of a cuddles. Red loves her food, she is not ‘food possessive’ but with treats she is obsessive and gets very giddy and demanding.

We rehomed Red for a week Red but she was returned because adopters she had chewed 3 handbags, a remote control and garden ornaments and was described as being “very destructive”. This is a typical trait of a staffie, and so we recommend not only deterring her from this behaviour but not leaving her on her own for too long and certainly not with access to things she can chew. So, for example, crate training would work well for her or confining her to one room in the house when you go out or go to bed.

The fact is many dogs chew and churn up the garden, especially during a settling in period and what she needs is a bit of patience from an understanding and experienced new owner. Red is fine with other dogs when out and about but given how much she loves attention she maybe best off being the only dog in the house and not being on her own for very long at all because she does not tolerate being alone in the kennels.

Red is very bright and has quickly learnt basic commands and needs plenty of stimulation and attention. Red is walked on a harness and is typically staffie strong and is a stubborn girl. If she doesn’t want to walk she just sits down, or rather, sprawls out! And if she sees a grass verge she drags you over under false pretences and just throws herself on to the floor. This is very funny and very indicative of her cheeky and confident character – and we love her all the more for it.
