Shaggy – 1 year old male Yorkshire Terrier cross Lhasa Apso

Shaggy is a 1 year old male Yorkshire Terrier cross Lhasa Apso who was found by the dog warden and taken to a local vets where he stayed for 2 weeks and was diagnosed with Ataxia. The vets asked if we could take Shaggy into our care in order to find him a good home. We believe he has been dumped because of his condition. Shaggy has been microchipped, wormed, flead and started vaccinations. He will be castrated in due course.

Ataxia is the loss of the ability to coordinate muscular movement. Ataxia can encompass a variety of different problems with coordination and balance. These will include a staggering gait often with a prominent goose stepping of the front limbs, crossing over of the limbs, and balance problems.

Shaggy is a super dog, he seems fine with other dogs and he’ll make someone a wonderful pet, he is medium in size. He is looking for a special home, someone who is at home all the time, perhaps you are a retired couple? We will be getting more information from the vet as to the kind of home would be best suitable for a dog with his condition i.e. other pets/children. Stress can bring on severe episodes of Ataxia which can be misinterpreted as a seizure so it’s paramount that Shaggy is not put into any stressful situations. He can be a nervous dog and a bit jumpy but sadly he’s been through a lot.

He does not need to be on medication. The condition can be disturbing to watch for some people but it’s purely a disability; there is no pain or discomfort.

Shaggy is a very cute, affectionate dog, he acts like a puppy and is a joy to be with. Please do not let his disability put you off, he can live a normal life and do normal doggy things, you just need a de-cluttered home so he can move about freely. You do need to be understanding but also give Shaggy the space to live normally and not molly coddle him. Shaggy is simply adorable!
