Smiley – 1 year old male Yorkshire Terrier Cross
Smiley is a 1 year old Yorkshire Terrier cross male currently being fostered in Tytherington Cheshire. Smiley (previously named Shaggy) was originally found by the dog warden and taken to a local vets where he stayed for 2 weeks and was diagnosed with Ataxia. We believe he had been dumped because of his condition (details of the condition explained below).
He came into our care on the 16th October and was rehomed mid November but sadly his owner, a single lady who lives on her own, cannot give Smiley what he needs, not because of his condition but because he is incredibly energetic and demanding of attention and she can’t cope, he is being rehomed from is current home until a foster home becomes free to save putting him in the kennel.
Smiley has been vaccinated, microchipped, wormed, flead and castrated. He has ataxia, which is the loss of the ability to coordinate muscular movement. Ataxia can encompass a variety of different problems with coordination and balance. These will include a staggering gait often with a prominent goose stepping of the front limbs, crossing over of the limbs, and balance problems. Stress can bring on severe episodes of Ataxia which can be misinterpreted as a seizure so it’s paramount that Smiley is not put into any stressful situations although this is highly unlikely to happen.
He does not need to be on medication. There is no pain or discomfort. He can get around fine as the videos (taken when he was at our kennels before his make over) show.
Smiley is a super dog, he is great with other dogs and he’ll make someone a wonderful pet, he is small in size and will need clipping at groomers from time to time. He needs a few short walks in the day and he needs a good sized garden for some off lead exercise, too much exertion could bring on the Ataxia but at the same time he needs to burn off some energy in short doses. We think he’d like another dog for company.
Smiley is a very cute, affectionate dog, he acts like a puppy and is a joy to be with but he does require a lot of your time and attention. He is looking for a special home, someone who is at home a lot of the time. He can be rehomed with older children/teens, not toddlers because he does a lot of playful mouthing. You must have had dogs before. Please do not let his disability put you off, he can live a normal life and do normal doggy things, you just need a de-cluttered home so he can move about freely. You do need to be understanding but also give Smiley the space to live normally and not molly coddle him. Shaggy is simply adorable!
