Teddy – 4 year old male Chihuahua

Teddy is a 4 year old Chihuahua who came into our rescue due to the owners working long hours and him spending far too much time on his own. Teddy was not walked a lot either which added to his problems. Although he is lovely to look at, he does have some issues meaning that I am looking for an experienced owner. Teddy always lived as an only dog, so he now learning how to be a dog again. It seems that he may have been babied in his previous home and allowed to get away with far too much.

Teddy is nervous of strangers and will bark at anyone new who comes into the home. This is easily managed as the new person just has to sit down and ignore him and Teddy will make the effort to come and make friends. This behaviour is due to him not being socialised well enough throughout his life. Teddy’s second problem is that he quite ferociously attacks his own tail! Although this sounds funny, it isn’t. This sort of behaviour normally shows when a dog is bored and has to release its pent up energy in other ways. In Teddy’s case, on arrival, he did this alot. Within 24 hours the behaviour had become better and that was due to living in a pack environment.

Teddy would be best suited in an adult only home. Visiting children are fine, but only those who are confident around dogs with someone at home for the majority of the day/home all day.

He needs someone who is willing to take Teddy out in public on walks and practise his people skills and someone who will love Teddy, but treat him as a dog! He needs structure and routine, not cuddles and pampering.

Teddy has to live with other dogs. He gets on fine with 6 other dogs which include a Labrador cross down to a Chihuahua cross and are both male and female. Teddy would like to live with one or two other dogs please. He can live with cats absolutely fine and has no aggression towards smaller caged animals (ferrets/rats/chinchillas etc.). He will need an extremely dog proof garden – Teddy is very tiny and very inquisitive and will break out if he can.

Teddy is neutered, microchipped and vaccinated.
