Charlie is a 6 year old Chihuahua cross Spitz. He is a gorgeous flashy boy who struts about like a little show pony. Charlie was surrendered into rescue due to some space and resource guarding behaviour. He started out guarding his owner and escalated it to the whole house when the behaviour was not managed correctly. Originally he was responding to redirection until the other dog in the house passed away and his owners husband also sadly died. In response to this Charlie has gone backwards as has bitten visiting neighbors to the property escalating his space guarding behaviour once again. Unfortunately his owner was unable to cope or continue his training so he has come to us to find a new home of his own who will continue his training and help him be the nice well rounded companion we know he can be.
Charlie is incredibly affectionate once he knows you but struggles with new people. His initial reaction is to guard everything he holds dear and he will need someone who understands how resource guarding manifests and can work with him to control it. He would benefit from a home with another well balanced dog to learn from and a confident owner to give him the confidence he needs in stressful situations. He’s generally very easy with things otherwise.
Charlie is housebroken and non destructive in the home, he is crate trained and happy to be left for reasonable durations of time. He is good with dogs and could live with dog savvy cats. Due to the fact that he has bitten before we will not be accepting applications from homes with resident children under 14. Charlie enjoys his walks but is a little jumpy of traffic and loud noise. I think his previous owner was hesitant to walk him due to his stranger phobia, however walking him and praising him with positive reinforcement will help massively to get him over this.
Charlie is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and will be subject to a homecheck and adoption donation. He will also come with 4 weeks free insurance and a voucher for a box of free food.
