Please meet Dapper Drake! Drake is a 1-2 year old male Newfoundland Cross. He came to us as an unclaimed stray in the pound. Drake has a lot of growing and learning to do. He is neutered and microchipped. Is this the dog for you?!
He must be trained and handled by people who are familiar with the needs of these large, intelligent and quick-thinking dogs which means they are not the best choice for first time dog owners. He is known to be an intelligent dog, although can be quite strong willed at times and quite difficult to “read”.
In a home environment they are calm and gentle loving nothing more than to be part of the family. With this said, their natural guarding and protecting instincts are very strong and as such he tends to be suspicious of anyone he doesn’t know and the same can be said when he meet any new dogs.
He is very even tempered and reliable. He will respond well to positive reinforcement training and will not take well to any sort of harsh correction or heavy-handed training methods. Being such an intelligent dog that like nothing better than to protect and please, he is quick to pick up new things, but this includes the good and the bad.
He is not the best choice for first time owners because he must be handled and trained by someone who is familiar with the needs of this breed or similar type of highly intelligent, large dog. He must know his place in the pack and is never happier than when he knows who to look to for guidance and direction.
Drake has a very playful side to his nature, he is still very much a puppy, bearing in mind that these large dogs mature slowly not reaching full maturity until they are around 3 years old. Drake is an intelligent dog, but he can be strong willed. In the right hands and with the correct amount of training, he is easy to train, but he must know who is boss and who to look to for direction for him to be a truly obedient dog. Drake is a gentle giant and one that loves being in a family environment.
Drake needs an owner who is familiar with the breed, and has plenty of room for him. Drake is amazing both inside and out, and the most wonderful dog I have ever had the pleasure to meet and foster! Drake is a clever lad and is always wanting to please. He is fantastic on the lead and brilliant with other dogs although he can be a bit rough with smaller dogs as he doesn’t realise his size! Drake is clean in the house and travels really well in the car (now he is used to it!).
He can be left perfectly for short periods. Anyone who adopts him is going to be very lucky to have him as part of their family! He is absolutely adorable, with a kind, loving heart. Drake has lived with dogs of all sizes and is fine, however, he is not tolerant to little dogs getting in his face so contact with smaller dogs must always be supervised. He would be best suited to a home without other dogs, or a large breed female.
Drake is a big beauty that would be happiest living on a farm or similar environment. He is very protective of our birds and small furry animals. Drake will need an adult only home due to his size and lack of history prior to coming to us.
Can you offer this softy a place in your heart and on your sofa?
