Hunter – 5 year old male Cocker Spaniel

Hunter is a 5 year old male Cocker Spaniel. He is being fostered in Gloucestershire in an adult home with other dogs and a cat. Hunter came into our care via a 3rd party who had been extremely concerned about his welfare over the last few years – physically and mentally.

They managed to get him to a groomer before he came into our care and had his coat completely taken off as basically, he had two tails. We know he was created a lot and did not have a free run of a garden.

I met him before he came into our care as was concerned about how damaged he may be seeing we are a foster home only so dogs do have to be safe with people and other dogs.

All I saw when I met him for the first time was a sweet soul who wanted to be everyone’s friend – he passed his dog test with flying colours.

Such a sweet boy

Meeting new dogs out on a walk who were straight in his face, he handled the situation so well

Hunter has not been with us for a few weeks – when he first came in he was so excited like a kid at Christmas, with all this freedom in the home, all these toys, all this attention he was all over the place. We decided to slow things down for him and hid the toys – used the crate for him to rest which he did not seem to mind and just calmed down all this exposure to new things and a new life.

We now have a very different dog to the one that arrived – he is much calmer, the sweetest nature, he has never put a foot wrong temperament-wise – the anxiety and worry have mostly disappeared now he feels safe and knows what happens each day.

Hunter plays with his foster sister, is very respectful of the cat, is amazing off the lead and is generally just a very lovely dog.

Out on walks, he has a habit of greeting people like long-lost friends but hopefully, as it becomes the norm this will calm down he is just so very loving. He has even seen ducks and swans and taken no notice.

So good off the lead

Walking on the lead is so much better

With his foster sister

So basically a really lovely dog with a lovely temperament nothing worrying has come out, he has now attended our Vets and has been fully health checked with no problems.

We would like an experienced rescue home when he is ready, another calm dog to live alongside – he could live with cats but has no interest in them. An active home who enjoys walking as he loves being out and about.

Loves playing

He would need to be an adult only because of his past – he would be fine with visiting children but this whole new world is too exciting for him and throwing a busy family home into the mix would be too much for him. Hunter will be neutered, vaccinated, chipped-wormed/flea.

Starfish Dog Rescue is a small Rescue helping UK dogs established since 2011.

The dogs that find their way to us are those in need of support in a small home-based rescue where the dogs are fostered as our own in our homes, the old, the young and more vulnerable that would not do well with a kennel-based rescue.

We work closely with the dogs assessing them so we know them so well we can give potential owners a complete picture of the dogs and what they need in the form of a forever home, we home our dogs as if they are our own and have a 99.9% success rate in matching dogs and people up we will never compromise so please do not be offended when we say no which is quite often our rescue is about the dogs first and their needs we home them knowing if they could speak it's about their perfect match.

We are a small team of local volunteers who have worked together closely for many years now many of us have worked for larger organisation where sometimes people lose sight of the most important factors and that is the dogs.

All our dogs are neutered, vaccinated, chipped, wormed/fleaed to us that is just the basics, dogs will get everything they need to make sure they lead a healthy happy life before they leave us, if they need surgery for heart problems, treatment for ear infections, dentals for infected teeth to name a few they will get it - we often organise fund raisers to help pay their vet fees from our wonderful supporters.

Each dog is a special precious soul and will always be the centre of what Starfish is - a Rescue that is all about the dogs.
