Nina is a seven month old female German Shepherd Cross puppy. Nina was brought over from Romania back in December and placed straight into an adoptive home from transport. Unfortunately both Nina and adopter did not cope well with the situation they found themselves in and we were asked to take her into our care.
It very quickly became apparent that Nina was completely unsocialized and afraid of everything that was new to her. Life in the shelter in Romania had not prepared her for the situations she would encounter in a domestic setting in the UK, but the one thing she had had to rely on in the shelter was the company and leadership of other dogs.
Nina is now looking for a new home with someone who understands there’s still much work to be done. Not only is she playing catch up with learning social skills she should have been schooled in at a few weeks old, but with lock down and social distancing rules her new family will be in the same situation as millions of people who acquired puppies during the pandemic.
They will have to socialize as best as they can until lock down is lifted and at that point further work will be required. This generation of dogs cannot simply be kept away from everything and then just be expected to cope when life goes back to normal and much thought needs to be put into how to deal with this.
Nina gets on well with other dogs and now plays with the pack in her foster home. She’s also lived with cats and would very happily curl up and go to sleep with them. Nina is afraid of new people but has gotten used to anyone we’ve introduced her to within a couple of hours.
We would love to find Nina an experienced adopter who understands the stage she’s at right now and us committed to increasing her confidence day by day. Nina travels well in a car and is house trained. Nina is fostered in Camberley, Surrey.
