Tara – 2 year old female Collie Cross

Tara is a 2 year old female Collie Cross. She weighs 22 kilos being fostered in Gloucestershire in an adult family home with other dogs and cats. Tara came into our care after being dumped at a kennel with her little baby Teg. I have found out she originally was born in Ireland 2 years ago and has been used for breeding – she was very fearful when she arrived and protective of her baby, her skin was red raw, and itchy, her coat dull and smelly.

Just worry and fear in her eyes. For the first week, we kept her in the kennel with her baby gradually getting her used to me and our dogs very quickly the trust grew and she cottoned on quite quickly that she was safe and so was her baby.

So nearly two weeks later she is now living in the home, it’s been such a blessing to watch her grow and let go of all that stress and worry. She has started playing with the other dogs and sharing her baby. To begin with, in the car she was nervous about getting in but now cannot wait to jump in the car to go on adventures with the other dogs. Out on walks, she is a dream I never even have to call her – she keeps checking in but is enjoying being a dog in the countryside. She has walked through herds of cows off the lead and ignores them.

In the home she is fine with the cats, interested to begin with but never nasty, she has been clean, friendly with all of us, and welcoming visitors now too. The only time I see her very nervous is if we walk where there are lots of people and dogs but I have not done this for a while so will gradually build this up with the help of my other dogs. She is not used to walking on lead and can pull but she is now used to a figure of eight which has made this easier but we are teaching her not to pull some of it because she gets nervous.

She sleeps at night in the utility room with her baby with no problem. She has been the most wonderful mother to her baby. Tara has not had a good life but her lovely character has kept her strong I feel, she so wanted to trust and be loved. She really is a special little dog who has probably had no training but is easy to teach. She can be nervous with new people but trusts them very quickly. Going forward looking for a home for her, she needs a good teacher and someone who is gentle for her to follow – another dog would be good as a role model and friend for her but the right home is not set in stone.

You must have rescued a dog before and have that patience and understanding to realize she is not a ready-made dog but has the potential in the right hands to be an amazing dog because of her temperament and character. In the next couple of weeks once her milk dries up we will get her spayed, we have treated her for skin issues which were from dirty living and fleas – we have had to be careful what we give her because of still feeding but it is settling down now and she is not scratching nearly as much. She is a bright clever dog and would probably take to agility.
