Ted is a 5 year old male Chihuahua. Ted has come into our care after a rescue felt he was not a candidate for adoption with the issues he displayed. He was sent onto an experienced sanctuary but they thought there was a chance yet for him to be rehabilitated and asked us for our help. We readily agreed to take him under our wing and began the task of working through his issues. Ted’s issues are far from workable. He is a typical Chihuahua and the type we take in every day. He is incredibly stranger phobic and will bark at new people and bite if they try to stroke or handle him. However he warms up to new people far faster than some we’ve had and is actually incredibly affectionate and playful with people he knows and trusts. He can normally be found on his back in the arms of volunteers being sung to like a baby.
Ted shares his suite with other small dogs and does well with them. He is however a massive bully with Chihuahuas smaller than him so will need a home with dogs bigger than him or as an only dog. Ted is good on the lead and enjoys strolling around although can bark at other dogs and people. We are working with this by redirecting his focus and he’s responding well to it. He is incredibly food motivated so training him out of undesirable behavior is easier with a tasty treat.
It appears from Teds behaviour he has lived a sheltered little life, most likely living with someone who loved him very much but did not get out much or allow visitors. As a result he is not sure how to cope with a changing environment and needs stability and routine with careful controlled introductions to new people coming into his space. We are sure with further exposure and correct handing he will go from strength to strength as he already has here.
Ted is glorious and pudgy, non destructive in the home, vocal at first meets and enjoys his walks. He likes cuddles, food and the “Phone Down” Song by Lil Baby and Stefflon Don. He doesnt like new people. Ted warning barks a lot until he becomes friends with you and does not want to bite if he doesn’t have to but may do if he is pushed. He is a typical under socialised Chihuahua who needs an experienced Chi home to combat this. His behavior has come on leaps and bounds in rescue with other confident social Chis and positive reinforcement. He cannot go to a home with any young resident or visiting children due to the fact that he exceptionally fearful and can bite when he feels threatened. He will take time and patience but we are confident in the right home he will flourish into a wonderful social little man.
Ted is getting there with his housetraining but will require further work in a new home. He is crate trained, non destructive and happy to be left for reasonable durations of time. Ted is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and will be subject to a home check and adoption donation.
