Otto is a 2-3 year old male German Pointer Cross. Otto is a rescue from Cyprus who recently flew to a foster home in Cheltenham to help him in his search for his forever family. Here is a little about him. Otto is one of the loveliest dogs! On his passport it says he is a German Short-haired Pointer Cross, but he’s definitely mostly German Short-Haired Pointer. His passport says he is 2.5 years, but we think he is a bit younger, this may also be down to his lack of life experience.

You won’t find a more affectionate dog than Otto. He absolutely loves being cuddled and having his belly rubbed. He’ll follow you around the house waiting for his next bit of attention. He loves to play, especially a bit of rough and tumble with another dog, or tugging at your shoelaces when you’re trying to put on your trainers. Despite this, he is pretty chilled in the house and is happy just to be near you. Otto can be crated. For the first couple of weeks in his foster home he was crated when left and he was absolutely fine. He is now being tried loose with the resident dog and so far, so good.

One thing to mention is that Otto has almost no training, so he really needs a home where his new humans will have time to spend with him on this – particularly on his walks. Otto has almost no recall (something that is being worked on but is taking time to set in), so he has to stay on a long lead 100% of the time. This can make Otto frustrated, especially as his foster brother is running around playing with other dogs – Otto will tend to lurch and bark when this happens. This is frustration for Otto and his lack of training – not aggression, however it does need addressing. When Otto is able to approach and meet dogs calmly, he is very friendly, but can play quite boisterously at times.

Otto has only met cats on a couple of occasions. He was on the lead and seemed unfazed, but this may need further testing. He has never met any other small furries, but does like to chase pigeons and squirrels in the park. Otto has met children on a couple of occasions and was absolutely fine. He met a big group of brownies in the park the other day and wasn’t fazed when they came up to stoke him. As he stills mouths when playing, he probably shouldn’t be rehomed with very young children.

Otto is such a good boy. He really just wants to please you and be loved – and it would be hard not to love this boy, his foster humans adore him. As previously mentioned, he needs a family who are patient and willing to put a lot of time in with him in training, so that he can be trusted off the lead etc. Perhaps someone with experience of this breed, as he is a typical GSP! Otto does have leishmania which doesn’t affect him in the slightest. He needs his medication each day which is supplied by the rescue and will keep the disease dormant. His leishmania and any associated costs will always remain the rescue’s responsibility. Otto has, with the support and guidance of his new forever human(s), the potential to become an amazing, fun, family pet.
