Samy – 2 year old female German Shephard cross English Bull Terrier

Samy was found on the streets of Romania as a puppy, she was emaciated and too young to be fending for herself. She had been butchered by a vet when she was spayed and put back on the street where her wound was sore and infected. She was picked up and nursed back to health and offered a home in the UK. The combination of her genetic make up and her disastrous start in life made her not an easy dog to cope with. It soon became clear that she was not immediately suited to home and family life. Her ‘wild’ life style and fear of hunger left her a force to be reckoned with around other dogs at feed time and her fear of men put great strain on the family.

[rehomed]

I was asked to take Samy on and I knew that the dog characters I had in my care would be a great asset in teaching Samy the skills she needs to be a family pet. On the first day as she bowled into the house, jumped onto the kitchen worktops (and I mean all four feet ON the kitchen worktops) I wondered what the hell I had let myself in for. Whenever there was a hint of food she would kick off and yet when the food was not around she was completely submisive with the rest of the pack.

Over the first few days I did very little except to monitor her and step in when absolutely necessary. Bruno and Junior who are very senior dogs in my pack put her in her place many times in a way that I never could. They were firm but fair with her and by the end of the week we were pretty much sorted. Samy no longer fights for food or anything else. She plays rough, as many of the dogs here do but when she steps out of line she only has to get a look from one of the others and she corrects herself instantly.

Now she needs a home of her own. She needs someone with experience of large breed dogs and with an understanding of dog training. She is a lovely and affectionate girl but she is also super intelligent and will get away with what she is allowed to get away with. No amount of training in the world is going to change the fact that her make up is GSD crossed with an English Bull terrier and she needs someone who can embrace that fact and enjoy it because I am telling you this is a dog that you can have a great deal of fun with. She needs an active lifestyle, mentally and physically and ideally would need to live with a dominant dog that could do lot of the ‘work’ for you ;).
